Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

there are no red brugs.

Almost red is the red sanguinea but it only thrives in the cool mountains .

if the temps get over 80 ish they die.

Sangunieas are also small and have no fragrance at all.

There are plenty of nice DARK pinks to be had tho.

Good Luck,
Shirley

Corte Madera, CA

one of these days, i'll be brave enough to knock on the door and just ask for a brug cutting of sanguinea. huge plant somewhere in san francisco.

=)

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What ever you do Annapet, do not grab a piece and run. LOL

San Jose, CA(Zone 9a)

That's a no-no !!! :-&

Citrus Heights, CA(Zone 9b)

lol, i wish more people in my area grew them so i could trade easyer

Sanguineas are very easy to grow from seed. They usually flower in the first 6 months also.

Corte Madera, CA

lol, i was imagining a cartoon to go with it.

oh, i love starting seeds....i'll try this one then. thanks.

Annapet, I have been seeing 5 gallon pots of Inca Queen all over. Saw 2 Sunday at Longs Drugstore!! They wanted $22. They were very nice with such beautiful leaves. I was so tempted.

The problem with them I have found, is they get virused so easily when you are growing other brugs. I had one huge one in the ground for many years and when I started bringing lots of other brugs home, it got virused. Some people live with the virus for it gets better at different times of the year but the leaves really bothered me. .

I was at the Arboretum in San Francisco last month and their sangs are all virused also I noticed.

i don't know what it is...but i'm lusting for sanguinea today. if it does great in san francisco, i should have no problem growing it here?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Well....... San Francisco is perfect for it. Cool cool cool. I think they thrive up to 80 in the day if they get the cool nights. But if not, they stress and eventually die. How hot do you get in the summer? And more importantly, how cool are your nights.

Corte Madera, CA

generally, we have cooler nights here in corte madera than SF, and still rarely have to worry about frost. it gets warmer here in the summer, but still roughly same as SF. i suppose this brug i can grow part shade, or even northfacing. all my brugs right now grow in full sun.

is it raining yet across the pond?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Maybe we need to look in Corte Madera. I need to look it up. How hot is the usual? I like in the 70s all summer.

I bet sangs will do fine. Try one!! Only way to know for sure.

No rain yet. I didn't put up my hoophouse. I am going to cry soon I bet.

Moonglow, a box of chocolates is hard to turn down! Give it a try, all they can do is turn you down. I bet they'll do a great trade with you!!

The first time and only time I ever saw a sanguinea in person was when I was visiting my sister in England...I asked her if we could go to Eden Project and found in the arid garden a huge sanguinea...Now with cactus growing in this area I would think it would get over 80 degrees in there..at the time I didnt question why it was growing in this dome...maybe they know something we in the US dont know...it sure was beautiful...I figured if any place it would have been growing in the tropical rain forect area......Judy

Annapet, that second pic is so red. I loved it also. Too bad they get so virused. I wish someone would work on them to get some that are resistant to viruses. I have to go back in early spring when they have had lots of water from the rain and it is still cool. I bet they look much different then. I am not sure how much supplemental water they use in the Arboretum in the summer and early fall.

kell, i brought candy's sang thread back up. wow, what red, and the color is different during hot and cooler weather. r eally interesting.

so, how are new crosses propagated? cuttings can be rooted, but really challenging?

Corte Madera, CA

me again...drooling on the photos.

potted up some sang seedlings today. kell, will definitely have a seedling rack setup with lights.

read and read about brugs, but nothing specific about sang seedlings care. any ideas? old thread? thanks!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Annapet. I just saw this again. What did you want to know? I do my sang seedlings just like my others. The time you will run into trouble, if you do, is when the temp gets up into the 80s and higher. Though if you have cool nights, I bet they do fine!

When you ask about new crosses being propagated, do you mean being hybridized? You need to keep crossing them hoping to get one that is resistant. I wonder if the crosses of X Arborea and x Vulcanicola are more resistant.

Corte Madera, CA

thanks, kell. i guess they are good. they have light now, and are kept in the unheated part of the house.

should i even try to root cuttings in the dead of winter?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I have heard from lots of people how hard they are to root. I know I had trouble at first and now I am trying to remember what I did to get them rooted. I bet I did it in spring. Spring makes everything go better, they have growth hormones pounding thru their veins. LOL.

I am always hesitant to cut on my brugs around here in winter, Annapet. Even those in the hoophouse. It is so wet in the air, rot sets in so easily even when I have not cut on them. I wouldn't take any cuttings now.

So why are you so hot to make cuttings?

You know every year Annies sends out tons of fat little sangs in 4 inch pots. They are a good size too for a 4 inch pot. They cost about $4.99.

Corte Madera, CA

lol, kell. i guess because it has been raining and i get bored. a challenge. but it will have to wait in SPRING.

annie's reopen jan 3rd. sigh.
