I got a couple of bonus plants a couple of weeks ago. I just dont know what they are, they didnt have a name on them and it wasnt marked on the invoice. While I am thankful, (thank you Brian!) I just dont know what it is so I then know where to put it... It looks like it could spread like a philodendron, but it looks kinda like a caladium. I feel so ignorant, especially after watching this forum for a bit now, I just dont know what I have.
So, please forgive my stupidity, but I sure would appreciate someone letting me know what they are and how to take care of them.
Here is the first....
Caladium? Philo? EE? What is it?
The first plant looks very much like Sauromatum guttatum http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/12536/
But it is not it.
Nope, not even close. But that voodoo lily sure is an interesting plant. Never seen anything like it!
all pics are syngonium
*Blushing* Thank you Brian.... I hoped you would come to the rescue. Looks like these guys are tough and can take anything I can dish at them. I will keep them potted up until I decide if I want to let it loose in my yard. I hear they take over stuff. Maybe I will put it by the street light pole. It is concrete and this should climb nicely up it. Mine will be the prettiest one out there!
Again, many thanks! Ana
becareful this is a weed and a half. The leaves change as they mature. Most do not reconize the adult leaves.
YES...and once they get on wood (house, tree, phonepoll) you will never never ever get rid of them!!!! pestpestpeast
Hi All,
I've been away for a while thanks to Katrina but when I saw the syngonium I just got the chills and had to chime in. It is without a doubt one of the most invasive plants I have ever battled. My neighbor planted it and it got out of the pots and is strangling the life out of everything in its path.
Ana, as they become invasive for you, you can always trade the extra plants off to some of us in cooler climates. Here they are houseplants and do not get invasive. If left outside here, they freeze and die. And we all love them. So you just got some good trading stock there. I love that second one. Beautiful! I have a raspberry one. It' looks like your second one with a hint of bronzy pink blush on the leaves. One of my favorite houseplants.

Well, what to do.... what to do.... I think I will try to put them out by the light post. Should it decide to take over the area, no worry, it is an area that is regularly mowed and trimmed. Eventually the roots will wear out.
So, out it will go. I will keep some indoors too. Just in case the neighbors yardmen get a little overzealous with the weedwacker. It has happened before... :^(
Maybe in a few weeks, I will be able to share! Butterfly, I do love the idea of your raspberry one!
I hate to see a aroid get so much hate mail so I thought I would add some good things to this.
Well most of the species and forms grown are weeds and are very hard to control. But like many plants a few forms may give the whole group a bad name. Their are a few rare and odd forms that are out there that have nice unusual leaves and do not take over. The species I am talking about are Wendlandii Rayii and a few other forms Rayii and wendlandii both have velvet leaves with white marking or veins. Here are some pics of odd syngoniums that are rarely seen
this is rayii

OOOOOhhhhhh, AAAAAAahhhhh, pretty! No worries, I am keeping the babies. They will be cared for until all the light posts in the neighborhood are growing them! Let's see what homeowners association says about that!
Nice one's, Brian.
AnaM- the syngonimus grow quickly here in Central Florida. If you keep them controlled, they will be nice plants for you. They grow more fingers per leaf, as the plant matures. One of mine is growing up by back wall, hasn't had roots in the ground for years, and just keeps on growing and growing (has air roots clinging to the wall, but nothing in the ground) I keep the top trimmed, so it doesn't go as high as the roof overhang. Controlled, it makes a nice tropical background for my potted plants in front if it.
