"Mama" was a feral cat that decided to have a litter of kittens under my deck last spring. She was a very protective mama and mean as a snake, but gradually I managed to befriend her babies. She continued to nurse them until they were 4 months old (now that was a sight!). Somehow, even nursing her babies, she managed to become pregnant again. Repeated attempts to trap her failed, she was too cunning to be caught. She had another litter under my deck about 2 weeks ago.
4 days ago we realized she was gone for good. The babies cried for a 1 1/2 days and we finally pulled up deck boards to get them out. They weighed about 7 to 8 oz. each and their eyes were open. I have been feeding them with kitten milk and small animal "baby bottles". There are 4 of them. Have not seen Mama, which tells me she must be dead - she has been a constant presence at our house since May.
Anyone have any words of wisdom on raising the babies? They went to the vet and we got amoxicillin because they have watery poop. He said I am probably feeding them too much - but the kitten milk container actually suggests an amount that is much larger than what they want to eat.
They are so cute - as I feed one, the others mew and climb up my shirt. I will try to get pictures when they are awake again. I hope to get them to eat solid food soon, but so far they are uninterested in the mushy kitten food I put down at each feeding.
Have you ever raised orphaned kittens? Help meeee
