Jackie, your pond is gorgeous! How big is it?

Love the big cyperus Knot! I traded for one of the larger ones and got the thread leaved one.

Badseed..this may be way more info than you asked for, that's the way it is with old grannies sometimes, just indulge me.......

I have four man made earthen ponds..one just for lilies with a stone waterfall and it may be 1200 sq ft or so.......hard to tell and it is only about 4 ft deep....One deeper just behind the house with a wooden bridge is possibly 1/4 acre with bass, catfish, large goldfish, perch, and a muskrat we are trying to rid ourselves of......one to the front and toward the meadow is where most of the yellow iris are, it is also about a 1/4 acre with catfish , perch and 3 ft long grass carp(Russian Amur).. One other a good ways from the house we used to swim in with our grandchildren when it was first new, it has since silted in and the wildlife have gathered, as it should be.........drought has been terrible here this year . We have 2 water wells , we pipe water into the ponds to keep them from loosing fish, and pump water from the ponds into a sprinkling system to water the grounds.....My husband of 47 years and myself owned a mom and pop dirt moving (heavy equipment) business before semi-retiring here.......I design and plant and he has a saying I find amusing..he says he's not too smart but he can lift heavy things.........In any case I am proud to have him and the help.....................

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Did you know that I love old grannies? :)

Thank you for sharing about your ponds and your hubby. I have enjoyed the descriptions and also how they work. I recently read about pumping pond water into landscaping and refilling with fresh water. I wondered how well it wold work. I guess I have my answer. LOL

If you enjoy design and planting and ponds, you might well get a kick out of some of my recent threads. I just moved "out to the country" so my kids and I have room to spread out and get away from the city. I just dug my third pond, but first at that place. I LOVE big tools. LOL Oh, and when I ordered dirt to be brought in, I ended up going with a local that is new to the business. He was kind enough to humor me and mix what I wanted.

It's nice to meet you.

Hey Bad,

I did not know you were into water gardens/ponds.

DH just had our first wg built for us recently.

yes...I am going to check out your threads you have perked my curiosity

..I am willing to share anything I have you can use for the ponds or butterfly gardens......seems the pond waters are loaded with nutrients.......

.....I have only had a permanent home here for a year now...weekended on this site for 20 years prior to retiring. We had a small modular home on this site ..we moved it across the meadow to build this house and now use it as a guest house when my adult children and also adult grand kids visit................

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

I will give you two the quick route to the thread where I dug the new pond, my third. The first two were on this property but I will be selling it soon and there is only one here now. :) I hope to be a *lifer* at the new place unless we finally get to go south.

We do plan to have a guest house at the new property soon. I have to have a place to house my DG friends when they come to work, I mean visit. Really! LOL

Sorry for taking over your thread Jan. :) Hope you get lots of water plants.

Pittsfield,, MA(Zone 5b)

Am working on my Horticultural certificate through Mass. College of Liberal Arts and the Berkshire Botanical Garden. One session was on pond building and was awesome. One interesting portion of the class referred to 'water harvesting' in areas where rain is minimal. Really interesting! http://www.countrylandscape.biz/ This site is the instructor's business site. Anyway my pond is, by most standards, miniscule. It's a prefab 300 gal (I think) pond with a bridge, a couple of waterfalls and about 7 little fish. In the winter I have to turn the pumps off (todays chore) and turn the pond heater on...it's a little trough heater for livestock. I've found my fish do better staying outside with the ehater than being brought in which is very strange. Mostly I like the North but there's times when I look at some of the pictures of "houseplants" growing to phenomenal sizes outside that I think...Hmmmmm.

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

I am still looking for some water plants, especially water lettuce for the turtles. I got a few but it will be awhile before they multiple enough to use some for feed

Floresville, TX(Zone 9a)

I have some water lettuce, but are you sure you don't want some nice water hyacinth too lol?

I let them take over my larger pond this season due to just being too lazy (and water lilies getting too much shade to bloom well; tree trimming time) to thin them out. It's a solid mass of lettuce and hyacinth.

Let me know if you'd like some!:-)

Pinellas Park, FL(Zone 9b)

I will take all the water lettuce you want to send this way. You can throw in a hyacinth or 2 also. I have small contained ponds so they won't get out of control. If you can give me an idea of postage, I'll get it out or Paypal it to you. My turtles and I thank you.
