Hoya Obscura blooms

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Actually it has several blooms, it sits way back in the greenhouse, so I hadn't really seen it.
Yellow too, my favorite color flowas.

Hooray Awanda! They are beautiful.

Does yours also get really looooong peduncles? Here's a photo of mine. The measurements are in cm, but one inch is 2.5 cm.

What sweet blooms, Awanda! I did not get alot of blooms on mine, but, did get a seed pod!

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Christina my peduncles are long, (which I never really noticed) but not as long as yours. How interesting.

Both of you - BEAUTIFUL!!! (and your plants, too!) =0)

Mesa, AZ(Zone 9a)

Ok Mel, send me your seed pod and I'll send you a flowa...heck I'll even send you 3 flowas:-).

Oh what nice flowers. I have been waitting for mine to bloom. Well heck it doesn't even have a peduncle yet. Super long peduncles. I can't wait.

Huntsville, AL(Zone 7a)

Awww, those are so tiny! That's a really gorgeous plant, too. Both yours and Christina's are so very healthy looking. Christina, do your flowers have a pink tint to them? It could be my monitor.

Is this little beauty in the PlantFiles? Or does it have another name?

Trelleborg, Sweden

Yes, some of my flowers get a pink tint to them since I have my obscura growing quite sunny. Any umbel on the not sunny side doesn't have the pink in them. I've had anything from beige to really pink/almost purple on my plant.

Christina

Trelleborg, Sweden

Yes, you'll find it in the plant files. I've added one of my plant a while back. http://davesgarden.com/pf/showimage/85380/

Thanks Christina. :) I don't know what went wrong with my search. I even cut and pasted the name and it came up blank for a hoya listing????

After trying directly in PlantFiles however it worked???

Mine was sold to me as obscura major. What is the difference if any between the obscura and obscura major?

Trelleborg, Sweden

No idea, but mine was sold to me as H. obscura longipedulcea (or something like that) but that's not a valid name. Some say it got that name because of the long peduncles, but an obscura is still just an obscura or am I wrong?!

Goodnight from Sweden

When I did the same search, just typing obscura in the little box in the upper right corner I came up with this:

Strange!

Yep that what I got the first time but then I limited the search to just the PlantFiles. I thought it would have shown what my direct search in PlantFiles did?

OK...now smell it (best in nightime or early morning). Does it smell like Fruit Loops cerial to you? Mine does.

I have H. obscura 'major' which has much longer leaves. They also get real maroon red when put in bright light. Here is one I had hanging on the tree this summer. This one has not bloomed for me so I don't know how long the peduncles would be.

This is my regular H. obscura which did bloom it's little heart out this summer, but I didn't really notice that any of the peduncles were real long. This one stays pretty green with only a slight blush of color on the leaves, and that only if in very bright light.

Wow Marcy, I salute your major:-), those leaves are awesome.

Oh wow Marcy, the major is really pretty. When I had mine outside it did get redder, but only slightly, like your regular obscura. I will have to put him in really super bright sun and see what it does. Outside do you have your major under trees or awning? What a beauty you have..

Knoxville, TN

Beautiful plants, Marcy! I like the little blush of color on the leaves.

What beautiful plants you all have - so inspiring! Karen

O.K. Marcy, skip the tree question, I reread your post. DUH... Went and checked mine out, and the leaves are longer like on the major. Have you gotten any peduncles on it yet? Mine is about 3 years old now and hasn't grown one.

Long Beach, CA

Nope...no peduncles on the major. Yes, it was under the tree, but did get a couple of hrs of sun when it was low in the sky late in the afternoon. I have since brought it back in the house and it has already lost most of that color. I got that one from Kartuz's as a small just rooted plant.

My 2 cents? They are all H. obscura...whether major or minor (which are terms slapped on by some grower)...just different clones. It IS one of my all time favorites...such lush growth, great flowers and sweet fragrance!!!

Thanks Awanda for posting about H. obscura...it is one of the old timers and just a classic!!!

Marcy whether if it's major or minor I love the leaves on it. I knew I had picked one up when I visited Kartuz's a couple of years ago. Anyway I found it and the leaves are longer. Only a couple of the leaves have that reddish color like yours, but I've moved it to where it will receive more sunlight.

Beautiful pictures and blooms everyone contributed! Wow, can't wait for mine to bloom.

Here's one more contribution to the flowers. This one really shows how cute the flowers are.

I recently got a plant of H. obscura with larger leaves and larger spaces between the nodes...growing much like a regular vine. The other clone I have has leaves spaced closer together, looking more 'bunchy' and compact. And I agree with you about the blooms and the happy attitude of this plant...

Carol

Prescott, AZ

I bought mine at Kartuz as well. 2 node cutting. I need to cut him up, as he has 2 very long vines and has never put on any side shoots. He keeps tipping in he's pot. I can't wait for a bloom, there so dainty looking, and I love the loooong peduncles.

Here is my 'other' H. obscura...no blooms

I've just potted up my H. obscura cuttings....I divided my one into two to double my chances of getting it to grow. It's so nice to see the pictures and dream a bit of what I might have one day. I just love the cute little flowers it has. Are the different colours of the flowers due to the amount of sun the plant receives or to the different clones?

I believe it is light. I have seen white flowers with a tinge of pink on one side where the light hit it....

I can't get over everyones hoyas and flowers! I'm sooooo jealous....lol! Luv the color on your hoya, Marcy.

Where IS everyone today? I check back in here once in a while, & it seems not much is happening here today. Anyway, I came across another picture of my regular obscura when it was blooming outside in the summer so I will post that here.

Marcy...please explain how your 'major' differs from your regular H. obscura. I am very curious! Carol

Long Beach, CA

The leaves on the major are much longer and more colorful. I don't think it blooms as easily though, as mine has not bloomed yet in 3 years. There is a big huge one hanging in Kartuz's nursery down by where the small hoya plants are for sale. I think it may even be on his webpage. I will check.
