Does it need support?

Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

Been wondering sumptin......The compacta I have has very loooong vines (see pic) and they are rather heavy. Is it okay to just let it continue to hang or would it do better with some sort of "support"? With all my new cuttings I'm moving stuff around trying to optimize space and I wonder if I should put my compacta on a shelf on my plant stand and let the vines rest on the shelf so there isn't so much stress/"pulling' on the vines. THOUGHTS?

HA! That's not a 'window'.....it's a picture I took of my compacta this summer out on my screened-in-porch. Don't I wiiiiish it was a window! =0)

Vines on H. compacta are very strong and can support the weight.
You can always loop the vines up around the hangar on top if they are in your way and that shouldn't stress the plant (unless you're trying a tie a tight knot that is).

*phew* thanks, Milan. It looks so pretty hanging I think I'll leave it that way.

Betsy, I was wondering the same thing about mine because a couple of them had reached nearly 6'. I did what Milan said and looped the two vines back up around the hanger closest to it a while back. One of them has two bloom clusters about to open as we speak, so it couldn't stress them much, if any. After this one blooms, I am going to take advantage of those two vines and try my luck with bubbler propagation. Is yours variegated? Nice plant, gal.

No, unfortunately, it hasn't bloomed yet. I took cuttings off it this summer and one of the cuttings now has a very small peduncle on it! I check the mother plant frequently for signs of peduncles but haven't seen any yet. =( The darn thing is about 4 years old....you'd think it would bloom soon!
And no, it's not variegated.
I spent the afternoon re-arranging all my plants (had to make room for all those new cuttings!) and here it is in it's new locale...I left it hanging.

I also just wraped a couple of the real long ones up and around one of the hanging supports. Seems like the plain green one gets much longer vines than that variegated ones do. Here is my variegated one when it bloomed it's one & only bloom this summer.

Betsy and Marcy, your compactas look great....i Love the variegated ones, they are so striking with the white and burgundy in the new growth....the bloom isnt bad either!
