Moving can I take my Althea with me?

Mobile, AL(Zone 8b)

I am moving from LA zone 8 to TN zone 6. I would like to take some cuttings of my Althea with me. Should I keep them indoors for winter or will they make it in the ground?

Thanks
Betty

hi betty,
How are you doing? Where are you moving?
I wish I knew the answer to your question...
We hope to be following your footsteps to zone 6 also. We are hoping to move by spring. One to many hurricanes here...time to move on! Good luck to you.

Hi Lisa,

We are moving to Cookeville TN. We should be there by Nov 15th. I can't wait. It will be very diffrent for LA. Where are you going?

Hi Betty,
We still haven't pinned down the area just yet. We are hoping to move up towards Kentucky/Tenn. area. Perhaps we'll still be "neighbors". I'll keep in touch.

oh, by the way, are you bringing your tortoises? I am wondering how I'm going to take care of mine in zone 6. They both live outside all year round. I know I will not be able to do that with them in Kentucky.

Fruitport, MI(Zone 5a)

Betty, I live in zone 5 and there are many Althea in the area that are just thriving. I would however give it extra winter protection since it has been in a warmer climate. I have often bought hardy perennials, in early spring, that have been overwintered in a greenhouse. They have often died to the ground, if temps get down into the low to mid 30's, before growing once again. This is due to the shock of temperature change. With winter quickly approaching in our zones, I think that it would be a good idea to give it extra protection.

Hi Lisa,

Cookeville is not far from KY. What kind of tortoises are you taking? I rehomed all of mine but 2. 1 redfoot who will have to be taken in for the winter and 1 russian who will hibernate.

Thanks Kathy. I grow the Althea to feed to the tortoises.

Betty,
I have one western box turtle and one of our native box turtles. They both have started their hibernation already. I'll have to remember that about Althea flowers.

I truly wish you the best in your new home.

Hi Lisa,

Your boxies will do just fine. My torts also love daylily and roses. Of course I dont use any chemicals when growing them. I also wish you the best in your new home.

Betty
