Jannich.. I am not in your zone but yes I Have heard of people being able to overwinter there..
You can take a couple cuttings and bring those inside and that way if it doesn't survive you will still have a plant for next year.. and if it does survive you can share your cuttings with friends :)

I agree, Laura. Great advice. Take cuttings for insurance. I hear some also mulch their brugs and it helps them survive if it gets too cold.

I am in upstate SC zones 7/8 and I leave mine in the ground overwinter--cut to just above the ground and heavily mulched (several inches of pine needles--in fact I prefer to cover the pile with clay pot if I can get my hands on ones that are big enough!!). They come back in the Spring from the roots and each year they seem to come back 2-4 times larger than the previous year. For example, my Dr Suess I got as a cutting in Fall 2003. The first year it has one 5' stalk that had several flushes. This year it came back with five stalks 6-7' tall each with several Y's and several flushes--it is still going strong!! So yes!! Leave it in the ground!! Bonnie

I'm in Z7B, I'm leaving 3 in the ground as a test, I have the cuttings so nothing is lost if it doesnt work, but if it does, it will make much less work for me. My Cannas come back when I mulch & cover them, we'll see! Good luck!

Thanks everyone for the info.I'm going to leave it and take cuttings off of it.I hope it comes back bigger next year. Its only about 31/2 feet tall but has 25 buds on it now!I would love to make a brug garden with differnt colors next year.Oh no another plant addiction.LOL.If anyone is taking cuttings for postage I love love to take them off your hands. Thanks again.
