Repotting question

Bloomingdale, OH(Zone 6a)

When I bought my non-hardy hibiscus a couple of months ago it was in a one gallon container. I didn't have a nice pot to put it in so I just plunked it into a big cracked crock on the deck. Last week I finally bought a nicer pot for it, but when I went to pot it up I discovered it has a very shallow root ball. Like maybe 5 inches deep. I went ahead and put it into the new pot, but it keeps tipping out if it is the least bit windy. I've had to tamp it back down at least 4 times in the last week. What would happen if I buried the rootball deeper than the first shoulder root? Would it smother it? Or I thought about planting it into a much bigger pot and useing river rocks for a top mulch to weight it down? Since the rootball is so small, I don't feel comfortable trying to drive a stake down thru it to anchor it that way.

I've got to figure out something very soon, I've been putting it into the garage at night for the last 2 weeks and it will be heading to the basement probably next week to stay. :-( It's still blooming, but they are small and weak.

Any suggestions?

Since hibiscus root readily from cuttings there's no need to worry about planting it deeper.

Thank you Donna!!! I think that is just about the best thing I have heard all week. I looked all over for this kind of information and couldn't find a thing about depth.

Whew, I can put it in a bigger deeper pot, yeah!
