I have to say that mine is my newest one. I love the bold colors and the size and texture of the leaves. Also it gets to be a huge plant. I pet this one as I walk by.
Though sometimes the Rex begonias are on the top of my list!!
Please post your pic of your favorite.
What is your favorite begonia???
Awww c'mon kell, how can we pick a favorite among this group!
Can I just say that my favorites are Canes and Rhizo's?
My favorite ones are the ones that GROW!!!!
Hap
Oh shoot, I was hoping for an incredible begonia parade to get us all a ga ga over begonias on our new forum!!!
Kell, here's the update on the Maui Begonias.
Have fun!
http://begoniaceae.blogspot.com/
I am wondering if I dare leave mine out on my porch this winter. I think so, they did OK last winter.
Laurie, what fun you must have with your best friend. What a great vacation.
kell, I'll join the 'parade' when we get back from our trip to Georgia this weekend. Can't wait to post some of my favorites :)
All but one of mine are unnamed............lets start our own ID thread/forum...huh?
Hap
MaryEv, if the photo is of your favorite, I would contend that it is named Begonia erythrophylla. If the sinus curls, then perhaps 'helix'. http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/62923/index.html
You can post your photo there too.
What is a "sinus"?
I have to agree, I think you're right in the IDing. I think I must have lost the tag on this plant and confused it with a genuine unnamed - B. u00## something-or-other.
This is a very happy, easy to grow Begonia. It had a rough summer outside, it really didn't like that much. But is back inside in a NW window under lights.
Sinus (at least what I understand it to be, other than the parts of your head that plants help cause hayfever to!) is the portion of the leaf where the petiole joins it. at times you'll see it 'twirl', a good example is b. 'Escargot'
Lots of other rex and rhizo's do this. I have the b. erythrophylla that 'twirls' (see attached). You'll see that it is similar to yours but is beginning to twirl and ruffle at the sinus. ( i searched the DG garden terms and couldnt find it, but I'll consult my garden books when I get home to make sure it is 'really' called a sinus)
You are so lucky to live in the same state as Baker's, do you ever get a chance to go there?
I have never been to Baker's Acres, but now that I know about them.....
I have been to Glasshouse Works, they're about 1 1/2 hours south of me.
But, sheesh, lucky me? You can always mail order, but can I grow them in the ground??? :) (total zone envy, here)
My favorites right now are the tuberous begonia's, but I hadn't even met the cane type or the rhizomatos before this thread. While I should be thanking everyone for the introductions, I wonder if meeting them was such a great idea. I am afraid I'm going to end up with another addiction in a hurry. LOL. And, I'm not sure where, in my area of Oregon, that I am going to be able to find any sort of begonia's except for Wal-Mart or Lowes. I'm really going to have to start hunting. Oh, well, I guess hunting will be good for me. Dotti
The hunt is the best part, Dotti. LOL
Begoniacrazii, I just loved your Hawaii pictures where the begonias were ground cover. What a great look. I am lucky here in that a hardware store actually seems to get in some really different ones.
The other day Calif_Sue and I found some really nice 6 inch ones for only $6.99. I will take a picture of one really interesting one I got when I get a new camera. So sadly, I broke my brand new one yesterday.
Dave's is so bad in getting me going on new adictions. I see, I want, I get. I am out of control. lOL
I hear you, i just went shopping at Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart and a few local garden centers her in Kentucky. I ended up with two begonias (that I dont have) and a BUNCH of Hoyas. I've become enthralled with Hoyas since joining DG, so I bought four! I guess I'll have to ship them or carry them on the plane (sans the soil)
Hey, next time you and Cali Sue go on a shopping binge, give me a call. I'll meet ya in the Bay area for that!
(attached a Hoya that I bought a few weeks ago. It's HUGE and was only $12. The vines reach to the ground (about 4') and the pot was 16"!!!
Excuse the messy office, glass of wine etc...
You should be drinking that wine. LOL. I have no clue what the name is but what a great color green. So fresh. I love it.
candela, you have DMail
I'll post them when I get home, I have my camera her in KY, but have post wedding duties to attend to so I dont know if I'll have time.
That hoya weighed about 30# due to the soil, size and fact that it had just been watered when I bought it. It is a nice one isn't it!
I've killed all the hoyas I've had in the past either by killing them with kindness, blatant neglect or mealy bugs so i'm going to try to be more diligent now that I've become an addict!
LOL You need to get to talking to Patricia, Carol and Mel. They are hoya nuts. Let me ask Mel if I can post a picture she just sent me of one of her hoyas. It is so beautiful it will make us all hoya nuts.
Love your work area, beg.crazii......perfect!
And, ahhhhh, love the begonia talk & pics......now, I have to get busy, eh?
MKJ
Candela, my friend emailed to say he believes your begonia above is
"'Charles Jaros' or 'Chuck Jaros'. One is the father and son.
A google search leads me to believe it isn't Charles, but rather Chuck

Hi Susan. Can you post a picture of Cowardly Lion? I just love that name. I can't imagine what that begonia would look like from such a great name. LOL
Cass, I hope you did OK with Wilma. Your window coverings are something else. I love the palms. You must live in a tropical jungle.
Sorry, Kell, I'm picture challenged;no digital camera but I'm sure someone on this forum will have a picture. I believe I got it from Begonia9868 on Ebay last year. It's just starting to take off so if you decide you really like it, maybe I can send you a cutting etc in the Spring. I will say that pictures I've seen don't do it justice!
Susan
She's a beauty, you can view her here

Thanks so much, Laurie. A real beauty!! And it fits its name, kind of. LOL
Thanks Susan, that is so nice of you!
Ohhhh, I like!
Well if Sue likes, you know I like too. LOL. It is just lovely Chris. Thanks for posting it.
Kell and Sue,
I have Cowardly Lion and absolutlely LOVE it. It is the begonia that got me interested in Begoinas. I have to say it is either my favorite or one of the top 2. hehe
Donna
I love sweet ol' Cowardly Lion too. He's one of my fav's.......I also LOVE, LOVE my 'Poponoeii!' Gorgeous, and HUGE! Have to post a pic...
Kell, I think that that begonia you show at the top of the thread is b. 'Ramirez'? I kept thinking that it sure looks a lot like b. sharffeana that I have, I thought yours or mine were mis labeled, but upon further research, b. sharffeana is a parent to Ramirez! Cool!
So sad to loose Rudy Zeiesenhenne, what a wonderful contributor to the world of begonias. (He was the hybridizer of b. 'Ramirez')
http://www.begonias.org/abs/rudy.asp
Here's a photo of my b. sharffeana
Ahhh, he is gone. But he left behind so much to make so many happy!
Lali, yours looks more green than mine. Is it? Mine is really that blue green.
