New plant!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I saw this at Safeway, a grocery chain here. It is really pretty. I couldn't find a price on it so I didn't get it. I was in a hurry.

When I went back 2 days later, the leaf edges had turned all black. So I thought no way. They call it Greenorange. Original. LOL

Here is their website.

Wow, cool color! Hard to tell where the website is from as you can tell English is not the original language. This line cracked me up "Destined for decoration, not for consumption".
Guess there's a need to clarify that!
I may have to go take a 'look' at this plant.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Hi Sue. I think the Netherlands.
http://www.greenorange.nl/

But what caused the black edges in 2 days??? I admit it is a beauty. Much prettier in person too.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

It IS a beauty...sometimes difficult to grow as it needs kinda exact humidity/water fert. The black edges because they over fertilized?

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Wow, what a neat looking plant.

Edgewater, MD(Zone 7a)

Its this one I believe, I got mine earlier this year and I love it.

Louisville, KY

Its related to the spider plant and was put into TC about 3 years ago at Agri starts. I believe it was later taken out of TC and is no longer being produced. I have one as well. I cannot think of the scientific name off hand I will look it up later when I have a bit more time.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

beautiful!!!

Tellico Plains, TN(Zone 7b)

Brian I think it's a Chlorophytum mandarin plant. I bought one last year at WalMart.

I never did thrive for me so I tossed it this summer.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Yes, chlorophytum "Fireflash" and Agristarts still grows them, their inventory list says they have 5000 on hand.

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

I still have 300 of them at work from all the seeds I planted last march...These are in 6 inch pots and still growing, I always thought they were tissue cultured..guess not always.

Favorite entree of snails and slugs round these parts!

Kyle, that is so pretty.

:-)

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Oh wow, I love that. Got to read up on it. Kyle, where did you get the seed?

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

I saw a bunch at HD the other day too so they are making the mass market rounds. I may try it but not till spring.

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

Yup, saw them yesterday at HD too. I picked it up and it almost jumped in my cart, but it was so wobbly in the pot I figured it wasn't well rooted, and like most plants I have purchased lately, it would sit in that pot for days to come. I'll wait until spring too. They are nice though. I bought a Stralitzia instead. I know it will make it hear if I keep it in the hoop house. Got kind of 'stuck' on them last month in Maui!

Linda I saved the seeds from a large plant I bought. it bloomed in the summer and made tons of seeds.

Mandeville, LA(Zone 9a)

I had one a few years back and mine got black edges and died as well. They are really pretty though. Good luck!!!!!

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

What do the flowers look like Kyle? A whole added bonus.

Laurie, I rarely see a BOP already in bloom for sale. You did good girl!

Northern California, CA(Zone 9a)

No, that photo is what hooked me. I took that two weeks ago in Maui. The one I bought was a 1gal baby. I WISH !

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

I've had my BOP for 2 years now, no bloom yet so it's going back in the gh. Laurie, that photo is beautiful. A trip to Maui would really get the 'tropical fever' going.

Kyle, would you happen to have any seeds left?

Vieques, PR(Zone 11)

Drav,

Very few plants have those colors so Fireflash is right.

I have 4 of them with a leaf span of about 18-20" or more for a trade. I will keep the others.

I have plans for the bed they are in.

They prefer shade but like a bit of sun thrown in.

I would be interested in anything that is not a vine. Cannas, gingers and heliconias are more than welcome. Anything that flowers in zone 11. I will compensate if it does not work out to an even trade. But, and I say but, these are healthy plants. Its up to you to baby them after they leave this mom.

I will enclose a pic.

Let me know your thoughts.

Vieques, PR(Zone 11)

Linda,

I would love to have a curcuma. I do not have any. That would be wonderful.

It will go out tomorrow. I will send you a confirmation #.

Very healthy, knotimpaired! So tell me, what is that plant peeking out from the right side of your picture. It looks so interesting!

Vieques, PR(Zone 11)

That is a jacob's coat or copperleaf.

The only cutting that I have rooted is going out for trade soon, but I would be glad to send you some cuttings.

Here is a pic.

When I switched to distilled water on this one (fireflash) it stopped getting the black edges.

Vieques, PR(Zone 11)

That is one drawback, the leaves will turn black on the edges if they do not like the water.........

Columbia, SC(Zone 8a)

Thanks Karen, I used it before and am listed, just couldn't remember how to find it.

This is my Curcuma. It bloomed this spring (before the foliage came out) I'll see if I can find a photo.
