first passiflora bloom

Andrews, NC(Zone 6a)

This greeted me this morning. Bought the vine at wallie world a month ago on clearance for $3.00 It look really bad. I planted it the next day and it took off. I'm in zone 6b does anyone know if it will overwinter here or do I need to dig it and store for the winter?

Great find! Beautiful, vibrant color! I would think you would have to overwinter in the house, but someone in your zone will know for sure.

I certainly am not expert on passiflora's , but I would think it would have to be wintered inside

I'm not an expert either, but I'm pretty sure you have to winter inside. John Vanderplank's book seems to indicate that it's a greenhouse variety, and I've seen the minimum temp listed as 45% degrees. I doubt it would come back from root if wintered outside. Vitifolia sets fruit, but you have to let it drop naturally for it to ripen, at least that's what I understood from Vanderplank.

Bring it in, looks like a P. coccinea type or cross of it, I have no experience with them but Logees catalogue (just happened to be onhand) lists it as hardy to zone 10.... though yours has some different color going on... but I wouldn't risk it. You can let it drop its leaves and then let it re-leaf inside, I've gotten blooms in the winter that way.. Never overwintered at a lower temp but maybe someone else has and can advise? It's a beautiful flower, it'd be a shame to lose it!

Thanks all. Then I need to find a place to put in the along with all the other plants that has to come in.
