Transferring VHS Home Movies to DVD?

I'm sure there's a way to do this. I have several old home movies on VHS, and I'd like to transfer them to CD. If I wanted to do this thru my computer, how would I? I'm assuming I need some sort of capture card, but what else? Then I would just hook my VCR up to the computer and record a CD? Or would I need to have a DVD writable drive? I have a CDR.

OR could I buy a DVR to hook up to the TV and then link the VCR to it and record from the VCR to the DVR? I need a new DVD player anyway. Lightning struck mine a month ago. Are there any specifics I should know before purchasing a DVR?
