How do people in less than ideal conditions (ie. dry climates, indoor growing) grow this one: http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/57787/index.html ?

Is it difficult?

Have you had blooms?

Is it a slow grower?

Thank you for posting your experiences with it here. :)

Trelleborg, Sweden

I find this one to be one of the easier ones to grow indoors. I got my little cutting i 2000 and it was a slow starter and didn't start growing until it was about one year old. It took almost 3 years before I got to see those flowers - but they were SO worth waiting for! After that it seem to grow a lot every second year and bloom like crazy every second year. The flowers are not only beautiful - they smell like gardenia too and one umbel can fill our living room with a fragrance even better than australis.

(Now I'm sounding like I'm doing a commercial for onychoides!)

You can see photos of mine here: http://www.myhoyas.com/Hoya%20onychoides%20min.htm

And a fun comparison here: http://www.myhoyas.com/Hoya%20onychoides%20-%20picta.htm (picta was hanging above it at one time)

Almost forgot to mention that it can take quite a lot of sun and it's still nice and darkgreen and sometimes the leaves are huge! I have one almost 9 inches long.

Well I certainly feel good about getting this one now Christina (it just arrived yesterday)............if I get blooms (or even one;) like yours I'll be sooooooooooooo excited!!!!! Ü It's the first really exotic hoya I've purchased and I sure want it to be happy. I've eyed others but was informed that they would grow better in warmer, more humid climates, so now I'm very pleased with my $$ choice. I also had no idea it would have such enormous leaves!!!

Thank you for such a wonderful write-up and I'll be giving it a prime location in front of my sunniest window.

Does it need extra humidity/misting?

It IS a slow grower at first...and it has long internodes (spaces between the leaves) which make for a LOOOOONG vine even with only 2 or 3 sets of nodes. The leaves are exquisite!!! Worth the effort!

Oh, Carol you know I'm gonna be hitting your website soon... my cuttings are barely in the rooting glass and I'm already jonesing for this one. I got it bad, so bad.

Thanks Carol I really wondered if onychoides had lost a number of leaves in transport. ;)

MsKitty you are extremely lucky you can order easily from Carol!

Yes, Lilypon, I am very lucky! However, you might be disgusted if you saw how much of a pig I make out of myself! lol
