A loooooooooooooooooong stem

Moose Jaw, SK(Zone 3b)

with 3" roots at the bottom, then 20" of bare stem, and finally a cluster of leaves at the top 8".

Would you:

1. Coil the part of the stem, without leaves, in the pot and bury it?

2. Root the whole leafless length in water (or use the plastic bag method) and then coil it and bury it in the pot?

3. Or would you just plant the well rooted bottom 3 inches and ignore the leafless part?

A curious mind with a somewhat bald funny looking Hoya stem would love to know what to do with it!

Thank you for any and all suggestions! :)

Lilypon, my instinct would be to go with #3 or:

Cut it in half. Pot up the stem with roots. Try to root the other half in water and then add it to the other pot.

I am very curious about what everyone elses opinion is. Sometimes I a little too shy about hacking up a long stem.

What do y'all think, ladies?

Thank you Nightbloomer.......I too am shy re: hacking but will do it if that is the concensus of the majority. :S ;)

Hmmm.. #1 sounds like something I need to try? I just posted about this somewhere, I think under Carols propagation thread. I don't think there is very good success rate if there are no leaves on the stem. Maybe cut it in half and try to re-root the half with the leaves. But there was also something about laying the stem along some soil, I'll have to go reread that, infact maybe that was another thread I was reading. We will have to wait for the experts.

Lilypon, I would plant it just as it is and then sit it somewhere I wouldn't have to look at it, until it showed signs of new growth. Then I'd cut the stem a couple of nodes above the soil, reroot the last three nodes (with the leaves) and then put it in the pot with the first one. It will take a while, but should be a nicer pot for the effort.

Thanks Mark :) First time I scanned the above I pictured something a little different.

I like your suggestion and will find a little less looked at corner.

I'm with Mark. The 'tribe (plant) has spoken'...that's what it wants. It may shoot up another vine from the roots anyway. plants with long internodes are like that!
