Taking Cuttings

Mansfield, TX(Zone 8a)

I want to take some cuttings of butterfly bush, lantana, and Turk's cap to share with others. This is the first year my plants have been of a size that I feel I can take cuttings. But, I need your help, please. Because I have never taken cuttings of these particular plants, I am not sure where to make the cut. Any advice you share will be appreciated.

Posie,

Really easy with a shovel, cut through the dirt just below the roots.
Do this all the way around. Lift whole rootball. Get a box and send to me. Hehehehehehehe!

How are you doing???

Love U,

The butterfly bush roots fairly easy from a new shoot. (I don't know about old wood) I've taken them, dipped them in rooting hormone, and put them in Pearlite and had them root.

I don't know about the other plants, but I would think that any plant is easier to root if it's new growth.

Sandy, LOL!!!

Posie, frostweed showed some of us how she takes cuttings to root. She said it seems to help if the cutting from a side-shoot or branch includes a little bit of the branch it was cut from, she gets more roots from that part of the cut.

Good luck!

Last week I bought mums to put in pots outside my front door.I made a point of choosing the plants with the tightest buds.Inplanting them I accidently broke off a pretty big piece. Not wanting it to go to waste I put it in water on the window sill in my kitche. To my amazement it has develope roots even before the buds have fully opened. My first time to root mums. gabriell, that is very encouraging.

Posie4U don't listen to the others, it os exactly how I said. LOL

I love learning to take cuttings. Although I don't have butterfly bush,
I have some mums coming. What zone is Tyler? I have zone envie for zone 8. You are cooler than here and can grow alot more because of it.

konkreteblond- I just gotta tease Posie. She has come along way since a few month ago. How did you pick your name? I love it.

I use tip cuttings, green wood, not hardwood, for all three of those. Side shoots work for me as long as they aren't too big. Sometimes things are a little harder to root in the fall, so take more cuttings than you need just in case some don't make it.
Sandy, when I first started reading your post I was confused, then when you said "send it to me" I knew what you were saying!

Calalily,

*Blushing* :8D

The 8 is my blushing red cheeks LOL

How are you? You will have to watch me close when I get to house
one day. I don't carry a "gun", I carry a "shovel". ;o)

You will find I am purely rotten inside and out. LOL

Oh no, another one of those friends I have to search for "digging implements" when they come to visit! It's okay, Bleu will keep an eye on you for me(although if you bribe him with doggie treats, he will probably help you dig and carry)

Wonderful, wonderful advice. You all are just the greatest. Thank you so very much. I might just try all of the options as an experiment for myself. I thought fall would be the best time to root these cuttings, that is why I was taking them to the swap (but not going to swap now because of work). But, it seems they root best in spring from what I hear here. Do all of you have that same experience?

Sandy, I am doing so much better. I changed all of the bedding and curtains and knickknacks in mom's room, and that has made it easier for me. You are a dear for asking.
