Butterfly Identification

Medford, OR

Does anyone know what kind of butterfly this is? I've looked EVERYWHERE and cannot find a common or scientific name. Everyone simply calls it "green butterfly."

Don't know, but it sure is pretty :)

A true beauty .. and one awesome shot to boot !!

I've found myself dreamin' of actually being able to see these. That, absolutely stunning beauty appears to be the Malachite !!

(Merely curious here) Is this a shot .. taken in Oregon -?- Or, from a lil vacation further south?
Or is he perhaps one of hurricane Katrina's or Rita's evacuees .. ? .. Could he have 'hatched' from being attached .. to a newly acquired tropical plant ? Ahh, no matter - - tis simply a beauty !!

A 'fresh' Malachite too (if my lil book isn't dated!) For It states that the 'marbled green' fades upon exposure to sunlight. Also states that the 'Yerba papagayo' and other related species are recorded as the host plants.

I'm still very much 'the amateur' myself .. so, I'm not gonna go TOO far out on the limb .. (hee)

That is stunning - a knockout!! ("clunk" - sound of me fainting and hitting the floor)

Looks like a Malachite to me. I'm just wondering how it got to Oregon though. I have them visiting my yard once in a while. Their host plant is the Green Shrimp of which I had a few, now I don't have any left. Here is a picture that I took the last time I saw one.

Lucky her! They are just beautiful!

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

that is just beautiful...

That appears to be a species of Papilio (Swallowtail). Which species I am unsure. Notice the 'tails' on the hind wings?

That is a Malachite butterfly. Here is a link where you can see it better.

Ah, I finally saw my first malachite this week. A nice big one out at one of the audobon parks. Talk about a breathtaking butterfly! The malachite is absolutely gorgeous. They are supposed to be seen in the southern parts of Texas and Florida...so how one got up to Chicago??? Or was the photo taken somewhere down south?

I wasn't able to get a good open wing photo but this is the vental view. It sure does have a wonderful chocolate and lime green markings.

Wowsers, Cat ..

What absolutely wonderful photo opportunities present themselves to/for you, there. Ya jes gotta be feelin' some gosh-awfully blessed, Cat ...

I can only imagine that acclaimimages' friend, had traveled south and was able to capture the stills of such a 'fresh' Malachite .. while visiting.

The Malachites are truly a magnificent representation of butterfly beauty, that I shall probably never witness .. other than by means of these fantastic photographs.

Magpye, here is a picture of a Malachite that landed on my back. My DS took the picture while I twisted my neck trying to get a glimpse of it.

Wellllll, short of my possibly being inconsiderate in the unintentional 'hi-jack' of acclaimimages thread. Certainly don't want that .. Forgive me.

Magpye, just giving you a feast for the eyes and ... flaunting too LOL. Lucky that I live were I can see this beautiful creatures. Maybe you have to come visit us and then you'll get to see them too. Next year when we have another RU, you may consider visiting us. I know of a park close to my house where you can always see them fluttering about.

You know, I think I might have accidently discovered how someone in Chicago could have taken a photo of a malachite. I have become SO addicted to seeing everyone's photos of butterflies along with taking my own that I decided to see if there were any butterfly conservatories in my area. In the process of looking I noticed that there is one in Chicago. So perhaps that is where it was taken.

.. lilyfantn .. You too ?!? ...

Quoting:
.. have become SO addicted to seeing everyone's photos of butterflies ..

Per chance, didja find a web site for the Chicago based conservatory? If so, ya know ya gotta share, 'ey? .. Nahh, ya gonna make me go 'look' fer myself, haintcha ... (.. still luvinly teasin' ya ..)

Ahhh, jnana .. mitey sweet of you for the invite. Should I ever find myself venturing into Florida - you can count on my giving you a holler, and holdin' ya up to it too! (hee) Strolling about to see the beauties that flit & fly about, in your neck o'da woods .. would certainly be the ultimate highlight of my itinerary .. ((huggerooners))

Well dang! Wouldn't you know that I didn't save it in my favorites list and I'm now having a hard time finding it. This isn't the same list I saw before but here is a link to the Brookfield Zoo which has a butterfly house.

There is one in Durham where my son is going to school and now I can't wait till the next time we go to pick him up so I can insist that we go there lol!!

Hmmm, now that I looked at that one more closely it looks like its an outdoor house. Maybe they close it in the winter as it looks like there is a structure.

Oh my word! The Brookfield Zoo!!!

I live in the south tip of Texas but we lived in southern Chicago Heights back in the 60's. I vaguely remember my parents taking us to visit the Brookfield Zoo when I was about 4 years old. Considering my age now...that was wayyyyyyyyyyy too many years ago.

Jnana - you are so lucky to be able to see several flying around. We get sporadic sightings and never see more than one at a time.

Lilyfantn - thanks for the Brookfield Zoo link. I've saved it and will look over the website shortly :o)

Now I gotta ask...does anyone grow green shrimp plant? That is the larval host plant for them and I'm on a quest for some to add to my yard.

Here's a wonderful link to a Magic Wings Conservatory up in the North East. Looking at this one REALLY made me want to find one in my area.
