Sorry that I don't have a picture but there is one on the plant files.
Since they are hardy in zone 8 I decided to try to grow one.
I started with a rhizome with a small amount of foliage in the spring. It is now blooming and looks just like the one pictured. It smells heavenly.
It is very easy to grow and has no problems.
Does anyone grow Hedychium Butterfly Ginger?
I have some similar to that. I started with 1 and it has multiplied to about 12-15. Mine don't bloom well because I have too much shade. I've got to move it this fall out from under the trees.
Where are you at Surfside? I will be at Garden City Beach all next week.
I grow several different gingers and my favorites are the Hedychiums. Super easy and lovely scents!
I have a few that need to be planted but I am afraid to do so. In my climate they will grow and spread like weeds. I try not to plant cannas for the same reason. In one year they will fill my bed. My husband gets so mad digging them all out.
Has anyone tried to grow them in 5 gallon pots but in the ground? Would that limit their spread??
I just found a big pot of Dr. Moy. What leaves. I know I have to go buy it.
What color are you Hedychiums?
Mine are Dr.Moy and they are apricot.I am going to buy some others for sure.
Linda
We live on 15th Ave.S. Half way between the Beach and US 17.When are you coming?I will be going up to the mountain on Monday and staying until Friday. We have a place outside of Boone NC.If you will be here before or after I would love to meet up.
Down,
You are making me so homesick I just got my Horry County library card out and kissed it.
K
By necessity I grow Canna and Gingers both in pots.
They do great.
A five gallon is big enough they wouldn't even know they're not in the ground.
You might also try Bamboo barrier.
Just section the bed off into planting zones.
Ric
Kell...smart girl...grow them in pots!!! The yellow one is a weed here and while it smells lovely when blooming...they invade everything!
I saw the Hedychium growing in Portland, Or....in the ground. They mulched it heavily in the winter and it came back every year.
Boo Hoo! Boo Hoo! All ya'll talking 'bout the Strand. I miss my stomping grounds, but had to move on in life. I was at 11th Ave., S. in NMB. Love it here, but sure do miss my Beach Music! I'm originally from Columbia. It's good to see so Palmetto State folks here!
Barbara
I love beach music! Sound familiar?
We are fairly recent transplants. We moved here from South Florida 6 years ago and I am still experimenting with what will grow in this garden.
Knotimpaired
You have the opportunity to grow some of the plants I grew in South Florida.I really am trying to turn someone on to the Heliconia family. They are so easy to grow and the flowers are fantastic. There are so many different cultivars. If you try them, get the clumping varieties not the runners. You won't be sorry.
Where did you live in Horry county?
rylaff
Where do you buy your rhizomes?
I got that one at the Annual Okaloosa County Master Gardeners plant sale. Think I paid 1.50 for it.
DSB, do you grow heliconias in Surfside and are they hardy there? A local nurseryman told me they are "usually" hardy here in Beaufort county but I don't see them in gardens and I visit a lot of gardens, so......... Would love your opinion.
I have a meeting in MB the end of this month. Anything on your wishlist? My garden runneth over.
P.S. Enjoy your vacation in Boone, we used to have a place at Beech Mtn. and my son lived for many years in Valle Crucis.
The VC Apple Festival at the Mission is this weekend and I am wishing I could be there.
Downscale,
We have the following:
In the ground: Arriving this week:
Andromeda Aurantiaca
Distans Flor de Perico
Golden Torch
Lady Di
Marginata
Rostrata
Strawberries and Cream
Guyana
Choconiana
Caribaea Wild Plantain
Lobster Claw Two
I can't say I lived there but I was more of a guest. DH and I had a trawler and Sailboat so we spent alot of time at Doc Hollidays and Crickett Cove Marinas. The Library was one of the most kindest. They would let me come in and take out audio books to listen to as we cruised and I would throw them in the mail when done.
Some of the nicest people we have met were in your area.
DH and I almost rented the house on the island in Bucksport. If that had gone through I am not sure we would have moved down here.
K
As you can see I am already on a heliconia binge.
wow, that got a tad bit messed up.
Aurantiaca and Flor de Perico will be arriving this week. The others are in the ground.
If I had to guess I would say we have about 60-70 Heliconias planted.
K
knotimpaired,
You wouldn't believe how much it has grown up around Crickett's Cove and Doc Holidays! Building everywhere. At Doc Holidays a restaurant chain came in (Crab House) --view great, but horrible food so it closed within a year. Now it's something else that I hear isn't so great either. They have built huge homes all around the marina.
I still go up there on business about every 2 months so I see it all.
downscale -- yes, I love beach music (thank you Embers)and miss it here. Believe it or not, I subscribe to the Surf 94.9 so I can listen through my computer. Costs $8 month so I guess I'll eventually give it up.
Even when I was a Sunset Beach (a couple of degrees cooler) I grew ginger lily and it did fine. Had it in a protected area by the house.
Take care,
Barbara
ardesia
I don't grow Heliconia here and I am sure it is not hardy. When I lived in South Florida we had a freeze one Christmas and they all frooze. The rhizomes were fine and grew like crazy when it got warm.We get alot more than one freeze here so I quess they wouldn't do well. When you come up look me up if you have time.We can go to Brookgreen Gardens.I am a member and have passes.
I won't be going up to the mountains until Monday. There are so many festivals this weekend that I'll be missing;the wooly worm festival, the Valle Crucis festival etc.Our place is on the other side of 321 off of Beaverdam RD.in the Bethel area.
Knotimpaired
All I can say is wow!I didn't have to do anything to turn you on to Heliconia.Watch out I was really addicted.
You wouldn't recognize the Grand Strand. There is so much developing going on that it's going to be like Florida really soon.
Last time DH went thru on the boat he called and said the ICW was pretty much turning into I-95 because of all the construction.
Beach, Boogie and Blues.
Is that the station you listen to?
K
In this morning's newspaper.
"Myrtle Beach is the most developed retail market in the US."
Now I know why so many people come here.
It is a good thing he got through on the ICW; it is shoaling so badly. The Corps of Engineers will (rightfully) be spending all their money in the hurricane ravaged areas for some time to come.
We had a hard time just getting to Edisto a few weeks ago and we were in a small boat. If we had met a larger vessel in the cuts we would have been backing up - or aground in the marsh.
Downscale, I will probably be working while I am up there but will let you know; I love Brookgreen. I took about 60 photos when I was there a few weeks ago but they should have the fall flowers in now so I think I should go back - don't you agree?.
YES!
It is certainly time for another visit.i was there on Friday and it was glorious as usual. So much nicer when it isn't sweaty and buggy outside.
I don't know if you practice snatching but the opportunities are endless.
This year the Pawley's Island festivial of the arts is being held at Brookgreen.I am taking my 3 and a half year old grand daughter to see Pinoccio this afternoon.
Another snatcher ???? Oh. this is going to be fun !!!! I will carry a large purse and small clippers and wear huge sunglasses and a hat so Jim Martin won't recognise me. Now I just have to figure out how to get away from the conference. Fortunately, my husband knows that gardens rule!
Are you going to the Charleston Garden Festival next weekend? It is a busy time but I am going to try and get there on Fri. for the day.
There is so much going on here next weekend. On Saturday there is a fund raiser for the humane society,a dog parade at Broadway at the Beach. My granddaughter and my little rescue poodle Hanna will be dressed as angels. They look so cute when they walk together on a leash.
On Sunday back to Brookgreen for the Fall festival which is lots of fun.We make scarecrows paint pumkins etc.
This is a great time of year here.
I am leaving for Boone in a few hours.I love being there at this time of year too.
Nancy

Hello
I just got back last night.Oh I love that place! (the High Country) The fall colors are not spectacular this year because it has been so warm but there is some color.Sorry but I don't have a camera and if I buy one it will probably take me a year to learn how to use it.
jlmmkm;I would love to meet for lunch I'll send my phone # by Dmail.
I'll be at the beach this coming Wed., Thur. and Fri. for a conference. Will have to work part of that time but if my boss is nice (and he had better be, he's my husband) I'll get some time off to play. How about lunch and Brookgreen???? WIll d-mail you both.
