And Dischidia ovata....I love this Dischidia

WOW! My gosh, Monette must need a heavy-duty "support" bra! =)

Okay, you've mentioned these "Dischidia" several times. I know they are a cousin to hoya...but....can you tell me a little more? What's the big attraction? Do they look/smell/walk/talk like a hoya? Are their blooms similar?
I'm hesitant to get interested in them. ~~ just what I DON'T need ... ~~ANOTHER ADDICTION!

Betsy,

This is what Dischidia ovata looks like when grown in sunshine.

And here are the flowers. It flowers more than any hoya I have. Well, maybe except for the australis!

Edited to say that the flowers don't open more than this.

Huge bloom Carol!....its a real eye catcher....

Beautiful Dischidia Christine...from the first picture, it looks like it vines the same as the hoyas....i love how the leaves get pinkish, that must be from being in the sun? Are they easy to root?

I like the dischidia grown in sunlight. The leaves are spectacular. I like the flowers too. Now, if they were only scented like some of the hoyas, that would be a plant I would have to add to my collection !

Carol, That umbel of cv Monette is beautiful. It is so large and almost looks unreal. You definately are living in hoya paradise.

Trelleborg, Sweden

My plant hangs in my southern window and gets plenty of sunshine. The leaves are more red than in the photo (had to use the flash) and it twines around anything it gets hold of! (see the photo)

I find it quite easy to root, it has root bumps just like hoyas under the leaves.

Oh Christina, now you've done it. There goes the mortage! Lol!
Carol, does the monette have a scent?

Carol and Christina: I'm with Heather! Just when I've come to terms with my hoya addiction (and, BTW, "coming to terms" also means "allow to grow freely"), you up and show me another type of beautiful plant. What's an addicted girl to do?? LOL Karen
p.s. - oh yes, more information and pictures, please!

This might be cruel, but here's another one for you to enjoy! It's the Dischidia pectenoides.

In this one you see the cute little red flowers and the "baloons" where the ants live in the wild.

And here the flowers have been replaced by seed pods.

Whoa! Help me out here, what are those balloon thingy's?

That's where the ants live in the wild... I wrote that above!

Carol...that monet is gorgeous. A good name for it I think.

Christina...does your Dischidia pectenoides live in the southern window too? It sure bloomed beautifully for a plant living in the house.

Very nice photos, Ladies!

Dischidia ovata is one of my favorites. I have my plant mounted on a round fern bark and it thrives despite some neglect. It is really a special little plant!

Will take some pics of more dischidia. Actually, D. ovata has three forms...and I have them growing in the same pot. Picture to come. Christina, I have your D. pectinoides from DL called D. vidalia (hort) and it blooms like crazy and seeds like crazy...but it doesn't grow much...do you grow yours dry in high light?

cv. Monette is one of Ed's crosses-no scent. It is named after his mother, Monette as is H. monetteae published by Ted Green.

What awesome pictures! I luv your Dischidia ovata Carol and Christina. You're such a tease to be showing me your Dischidia pectenoides. So it looks like it is easy to start from seeds.....cool.

DUH!!! Sandy sent me that dischidia...and I love it! David just ID'd it.

I sprouted some seeds...but they damped off. I am sure I watered too much.

Your cv. Monette is gorgeous Carol. Another one with awesome, huge flowers.

Those Dischidias are pretty cool. I love the leaves on the Dischidia ovata and the balloon thingys on the Dischidia pectenoides.
