managing orientals in the fall

Chapin, SC(Zone 7b)

Hi,

My mom gave me some oriental & asiatic bulbs this year. They are turning yellow/brown. Should I cut them down or what? Can anyone tell me whether or not they really come back in central Florida? I need room for daylilies of they don't.

Thanks,

Leslie

If they are dying back, go ahead and cut the stems and plant them.

I can't say how well they'll do for you, but you might have a nice surprise. They don't take much room and I just tuck them in between daylilies.

What kind of winter temps do you have? That will make a difference.

My climate is not as warm in the winter as yours, but my lilies get cut back now as they yellow and then mulched heavily. I've added some new Orientals this year and I just started with some Asiatics, but plan to do the same with them. Hope I don't lose them, 'cuz they are really just right, right where they are. You just never know. I am beginning to believe that many things in gardening are educated guesses--and sometimes you don't guess correctly.

Moby, I don't understand. They're planted now.

Darius, our lows are usually in the 20's.

Chops, those low's should give you enough "chill" time so they bloom next year. If the stems are yellowing/brown now, cut them back to the ground. Mine here in 6a are still mostly green, only have orientals.

I was shocked today to walk outside and find new lily bulbs (just planted in August) blooming! I hope they hurry before we get a frost. I could not believe my eyes. It's been so warm here that they are confused, I think.

I'm sorry ~ what don't you understand?

Moby,

you said, "cut the stems and plant them". Did you mean plant the stems? I've never heard of that. I thought they had to grow from the bulbs.

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

LOL Sorry about that!

Yes, you are correct ~ I should have been more clear by saying cut and discard stems, then plant the bulbs.

Thanks to you all.
