I know what this seed pod is from, do you?

These grow in TX, even survived the frost at Christmas. They have large white, pink or yellow flowers and this is the fruit. It has a flavor like watermelon and Sobe has a drink flavored with it.
Edited to add: the fruit is as big as the palm of my hand and weighs over half a pound.

Dragonfruit?

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Is it one of the Opuntia, prickly pear cactus pods?

Never mind my guess. Fruit the size of your hand would be
larger than the opuntia fruit I'm sure. Opuntia was the first thing
I thought of.

I think PerennialGirl got it. It should be Dragonfruit. I know that Sobe has a drink with dragonfruit. I wonder what it tastes like fresh, if it is good fresh. Is it easy to propagate?

Yes, it is dragon fruit. It tastes like watermelon when fresh, but not as sweet. It is loaded with little black seeds. Wonder if they will germinate?
You have to have two different varieties to set fruit. Hand pollination works best, but sometimes the bees do a good job. The plants have air roots, and need to be protected from sunburn. They get huge and have been known to pull down trees that they are climbing in. In Asia, they plant them with 4 x 4 posts for support and wrap the bottoms with burlap so the air roots have something to attach to.

I had no idea!! I just traded for a Dragonfruit cutting this year--no clue it actually produces edible fruit!! Seems way to small to have fruits!! hehehe Bonnie

They can take up to 7 years to have fruit.

Is it an epi-cactus? What does the blossom look like?

Raydio, here are some links to answer your questions: http://www.geocities.com/wenjin92014/foto2001/dragon.htm and http://wchow.home.znet.com/DG2005/dg2005.htm and http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/54131/index.html

I am growing Hylocereus undatus as well, and I had heard that it takes two years to produce fruit from a cutting, and four years to produce fruit from seed.

Susie, did you plant the seeds?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Not yet Clare, I sent some to Ric. Do you want some?(they're stuck to a paper towel, kind of sticky)

Thank you kindly for the offer. I would love a couple. I'll send you a D-Mail.
