Inanda, I knew you'd look LOL
Here's the new GH I got, empty
brugs, (don't look Inanda)
I still have lots of plants on the deck, 3 tall brugs that I haven't yet figured out what to do with them, because I really don't want to cut them down, but they are over 8' tall.
My favourite, Whiskers, I brought into the basement.
I warn you, don't look at the mess, it's the only spot in the basement for mess, but that's where the whiskers is.
here whiskers is up against the roof already, good thing we can take it out through the garage in the spring.
I have it downstairs, under the living room. We have a typical split level house, and in the evening the heavenly fragrance of Whiskers fills the basement and suite down there, then drifts up the stairs and fills the living room.
I hope it blooms all winter like it did last year on the deck...
Linda
Will it get enough light to survive in the basement? I don't see much natural light there. Nice idea with the greenhouse...it wouldn't last a day here if it wasn't bolted down to the ground! I thought it was bad enough that I had to overwinter some 'hardy' Cyclamen and some more tender alpines in the basement window....but BRUGS! Talk about space constraints.
Of course I looked at this thread. What do you think??? You are quite impossible. Between you guys on the island, Wilma and even Echoes with her beautiful Garibaldi, I prob. will break down one day soon. Wouldn't mind a Snowflake but would have to learn how to bonsai it!!!
Total bliss. A GH like that would walk overnight around here. Or be used as a druggy gathering place. That is why I used to put one up just for the spring and then dismantle it towards end of May.
So, now you have your greenhouse AND the one attached to your diningroom deck?? Or have you decided not to use the deck this year due to Cooper? GH looks smaller than your deck one, which was totally crowded when I saw it last winter??
Poor Whiskers. I'll send a truck around right away. Or maybe you'll have to send him to a local GH for winter vacation. I used to send my LA iris to the conservatory for the winter but now with new polices - can't do that any more. Last year Echoes took them in for the winter. BTW, Echoes hybridized some and we have babies galore. Can't wait to see how they bloom.
Supposed to be warm again today so .... will plant the last few lilies, general tidying up and getting garage ready for winter VW hibernation. Inbetween watching the stove of course.
Happy Thanksgiving.

Hi.
MG99, I envy you to be able to set up such a flimsy GH and overwinter plants in it. Over here in Montreal, it would have been blown away weeks ago. If one did manage to secure it to the ground effectively, the -40C that is often our lot in winter would have frozen anything "protected" inside through and through before December had begun.
Although we are rated as zone 5 here, it is not rare for zone 4 or even zone 3 plants not to survive some of our winters. As I was saying: I envy you. Also, I have grown to positively hate winter, which seems to last for 7 months. Global warming my foot! That's why we're selling the house and moving to our Fort Lauderdale condo, where I'll be able to grow zone 11 plants year-round. WooHoo!
Take care.
Sylvain.

How does that old song go "always look on the bright side..."
We may have -40C, snow up to the pits of the abominable snowman, too early and too late frost; but we don't get quakes, hurricanes, or sunamis (sp).
We have a natural period of rest and reflection to consider projects for the following year; we can feel absolutely righteous about going off to the tropics for R&R in the worst of the winter (and this year King Ralph is even kicking in with a little holiday money LOL)
The turkey is in the oven as I write (family coming here today cause auntie doesn't get enough cooking with her day job LOL)
Thanks Lynn, I feel so much better now. Today anyway, it feels like winter is a long way off. Hard to believe after a blizzard a few days ago.
Linda you filled that gh up real fast. Sure you got it big enough? They are never big enough.
