sago palm sorrows...

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

I got this on sale..because I thought it was cute...I admit I let it get alittle dry and the needles browned some....it also has some kind of white stuff on it...probably a bug or fungus...but my main concern is the strange growth !!

The new grow looks too big and not in the natural plant shape...can anyone tell me what is going on ?

looks like typical leaf shape of plant grown in a darker area than where it was when the previous leaves came out.. that's all. But the white stuff is probably mealy bug and you should spray for that. if you are losing the battle with ugly leaves, bugs etc. Sagos don't mind a bit if you just cut off all the leaves. Then you can start anew. But they do like a LOT of light (do best actually in full sun outdoors if in the ground- in a pot they prefer morning or late afternoon full sun).

The white stuff could also be cycad scale. It's almost impossible to get rid of! We are battling it down here, it's all over the whole county and sagos are dying.

Monroe, WI(Zone 4b)

My sagos had scale in the g'house, tried to get rid of it and finally did.....I cut off ALL the leaves and tossed them in a paper bag and tossed THAT in the furnace!!!! They've gotten new leaves/fronds, whatever they are called and so far scale-free.

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I thought mine were scale free after cutting the fronds, spraying, cutting more fronds........but this summer the scale came back. I'm going to dig up several sago palms this weekend and replace them with bananas!

OH...thank you all....I do have him in the shade !! I will give him a serious haircut and start again - in full sun :)

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Somewhere on DG there was a solution to the scale....It wasn't too long ago....AFTER I had stated that I chopped my 10 year old, 6' sago's down....booohooo....

I remember that they were sprayed with a hard spray from the hose and then Neet (?) oil was put on.....the oil thingy I'm not too sure of. But supposed ly that works and you save the plants. NOW they tell me...lol

It's worth a try. And yes, give that baby some more sun....

He is in the sun and I do have some neem oil so I will give that a try.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

But the first and foremost thing is the hard spraying from the hose....according to them...(?)

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

it would be hard to find a sago anymore in florida that doesn't have the cycad scale. i have noticed that even by taking off every leaf the scale comes back as soon as new leaves do... such a shame that so many of the big old ones are dying. nothing worked in the keys and i don't see anything really working up here either. debi

That is too sad. I notice they have all sizes here at HD and Lowes. Tons.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Kell,

HI........I noticed them here too.....all had scale.....UGH

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

In the stores they had scale, Hap?? That is so tacky. I can't stand it when I spend my money and I get bugs. That is so tacky.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

They looked really terrible. But, of course, if you don't know what that "white stuff" is, .............sad.

Pickens, SC(Zone 7a)

Yes...I didnt know what that white stuff was....I threw mine away...I feel sorry for him but I dont need another plant care nightmare. Thanks for all your advice...

Next time I go to HD I must look closely and see if they are covered in bugs also.

I will say I saw a big 2 trunked Date Palms the other day at Lowes. I may go back for it. It has been on my mind. LOL.

It had 4 ft trunks. Tell me, can I repot it in a nice pot and trim the roots and put it in my dining room to live forever more? Do they thrive inside? It was only $46 and I just loved the trunks.

Anyone know??

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

A sago with 4 trunks?

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Gee, Kell, we grow them in full sun here....I think that you would end up with a Robelinii that looks like the poor sago looking for light. But, give it a try...what have you got to loose? If it doesn't like it, it will tell you and you can put it outside.....Right?

Kell, are you wanting to put a sago inside? or a pygmy date palm? Both can be grown inside, the pygmy date(phoenix robellinii needs the most light) Here's a list of palms for indoors. http://www.ext.nodak.edu/extpubs/plantsci/landscap/h1123w.htm
Please tell me you are not considering getting a full size date palm for your yard! They are HUGE and take up a lot of room unless they have a trunk that's at least 10ft.
