Carpithian Walnuts

Niles, MI(Zone 5a)

About 30 years ago my father planted two carp.walnuts in the yard. They never have set any nuts. I have no idea what to do to get them to bear fruit.
Hopefully someione out there can tell me what to do. Balck walnuts grow here like crazy.

I don't know about getting them to bear fruit but I do know the wood is beautiful. I have a 110 year old table that is carpathian walnut.

Annabelle,

They should have borne in about 7 years. A relative from Southhaven planted 2 here about 35 years ago. They bear every year...yes there are insect problems.

Uh - have you done a websearch on them? Because I just typed in "Carpathian Walnuts" & came up with a couple of reasons why you might be nutless.

1 - Some Carpathian Walnuts are warm-weather strains & don't produce well, if at all, in colder climates.

2 - All Carpathian Walnuts are highly susceptible to sprint frost burn & bud loss, leading to no nuts being produced.

There was a lot of other info, but I'll leave you to ferret it out.

I think it is the frost, here in SW Michigan we always get one last frost at the wrong time. This nest spring I'm going to try and use a small smuge pot to keep them warm, we'll see.
I did a search and the frost seem to be the problem, trees came from a neighbor so I know they are ok for the area
Thanks
