Anybody there has a good luck with peonies in No,California = Bay Area ? Would love to have some without having to throw sacks of ice on them in "winter".
Peonies in No.California
I had several herbaceous and tree peonies in the San Rafael area. All of them did well. I am nowhere near there now, but as far as i know they are still going strong.
Thanks - will try them !

Just a word of caution: peonies need a long period of below freezing temps in their winter dormancy and rarely survive long above zone 8. They must have a cold dormant period or they will just peter out in too warm a climate. Sometimes the problem is that even if it does get cold enough, the period of cold temps isn't long enough.

must be a micro-climate working for me. thanks for the word of caution.
i guess i better enjoy mine while they last.

There are two different articles from Sunset (www.findarticles.com). I did see a few other sites which stated that you can't grow peonies above zone 8. The above websites beg to differ.
