Look at those leaves. I wish we had another month of this great weather. Oh, we probably do. LOL

Ric should I leave my violet stems taro in its container to overwinter in the basement or should I take it out of the container??

Kell you are being mean! LOL

Actually if we are lucky it will be 6 weeks of great weather to go. :-)

Great job on your GH Ric ...... I've been through a similar transition over the years and learned with each "expansion". Sounds like you are covering all the bases and have it figured out.

DH is NOT a gardener or even plant lover, but he does love the "building" thing. He bought me a wonderful GH a few years ago and my heart about stopped a few days ago when he suggested perhaps "we" needed a bigger greenhouse when we move to the country next year ...........

I calmly let the conversation run its course and then did a ridiculous happy dance and a huge WOOOOOHOOOO!! Time will tell, but I'm thinking of leaving the end off of the existing one and butting it up against an additional one ..... thinking of zones! Oh be still my heart.

PS If you get Charlie's catalog, my greenhouse appears regularly in their catalog on the "Cascade" pages.

Happenstance can you scan the picture of your greenhouse from their catalog for us to see?

Oh I hate to steal Ric's thread, here's a link from a couple of year's ago with some info on the GH:
http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/406583/

And this is one of the images that I sent them a couple of years ago. They use it in their catalog and have a large glossy blowup of it that they use at tradeshows. It was one of their floor models at the SF Flower and Garden shows a few years back. They disassembled it and DH picked it up in my Jeep at the end of the show ....... took us about 4 weekends to put it up and we broke only one piece of the tempered glass....... it was the last roof panel and of course I already had the plants loaded into the GH .....what a mess that was to clean up.

Back to Ric's new GH.....let's see some more pics of the collection Ric!

LOL kell!

Luckily we're having a mild Fall soooo far.
It was 84 just a few days ago.
It's 60's now w/ mid 40's lows.
But back up to the low 70's by Tues.

As our first frost date it the 15th and we've had snow on Halloween...........(VERY rarely)
Can't complain.

I took a bit of an off day.
Mostly clean-up day today.
Scraped the excess silicon off the new GH and put up some vapor barrier.
That really helped to break the cool breeze we had this afternoon.
Tomorrow we'll finish framing and barrier.
Hopefully we'll get the door up Monday.

We still have to recover the Hoophouse also.

Hs that beautiful structure has had me drooling for years....lol
(Even before I knew it was yours.)

Thanks for the help w/ this guy!
I think it's Cresting!

:) Donna,
I leave mine in the pot.
In fact I leave all my EE's in their pots except the plain greens.
I think they do better that way.
I'm afraid of nicking the roots and starting rot.
Plus I'm lazy! LOL

I started some of these today.

Thanks, Ric. When you leave them in the pot do you water them? What did you start today??

How interesting, I like that one. So, new plants form from the bulbils?

Winnipeg, MB(Zone 4a)

Ric, I had to look it up. Neat the way it propagates.

Well we brought in the two big guys this afternoon.
We built rolling planters for them lst Spring.
Hauling 80 pound pots around was getting to be a pain! Literally!

We made them 1" under 7' and just over 24"
This allows us to get them thru the front doors easily.
They'll roost in the Living Room til Spring.

Very nice planters Ric. Your plants really are very healthy, and growing great. Don't know what you feed them, but they really like it.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

luv the planters

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

Are they still sitting there? I can run by with the uhaul in the am. LOL

Hey, I still want that *one*!

Cincinnati, OH(Zone 6b)

Sorry they were rolled in minutes after the shot was taken. lol

Thanks for the comments though.

2pug,
I don't really feed them.
They were planted in 1/4 composted manure, 1/4 top soil and 1/2 yard compost.
(we have no lawn so compost is just leaves, bark and weeds)
Two buckets of that.
Then I added a bucket or so of medium orchid bark..
Mixed it up and filled the planters.
It is a very moisture retentive and fast draining mix.
I top dress w/ manure and compost.
Neither of these plants like to be dry or soggy.

The planters were very easy to make.
They only took a few hours each.

Here's how we did it.
They are 1 inch shy of 7' tall and 24 x 24" square.
(to fit in the front door)
Just 2 x 4's, some casters, lattice and containers.
These are A rope handle tote (Big Lots) and a Christmas tote (HD).
Bottom and sides are some old cedar boards we had lying around.

Then coco fiber, wild grape vines and cork.
