The following is a checklist of things to do when ..................
formulating a new name:
(1) Make sure your proposed name is unique and in a modern language e.g. not in Latin.
(2) Make sure that your name cannot be confused either in spelling or pronunciation with an existing one.
Example: Brugmansia 'Cire' and 'Ciera' are two different brugs but the names are similar and can easily be confused
Brugmansia Registry list of ICRA registered names
(3) Make sure that your name could not be interpreted as being likely to exaggerate the merits of the cultivar (`Best Ever', `The Greatest' and `Tastiest of All' are not acceptable for obvious reasons!)
(4) Make sure that your epithet has no more than 10 syllables and no more than 30 characters, excluding spaces and the single quotation marks.
(5) Make sure that your epithet is not only made up of simple descriptive words like `Red', `Giant White' or `Small'.
Example: Brugmansia Kyle's Giant White is acceptable. If it was called simply 'Giant White' it would not be acceptable.
Example: There are two brugs named 'Enorm' and 'Big'. Neither one is acceptable
(6) Do not use any of the following banned words or their equivalents in any language in your epithet: "cross", "hybrid", "grex", "group", "form", "maintenance", "mutant", "seedling", "selection", "sport", "strain", "variety" (or the plural form of these words in any language) or the words "improved" or "transformed".
(7) Do not use any punctuation marks except for the apostrophe, the comma, a single exclamation mark, the hyphen and the full-stop (period).
(8) If your epithet is a single word, make sure that the word is not the same as that of a genus, whether in botanical Latin or in a modern language. (Erica, Daphne, Iris and Veronica happen to be Latin names of genera and are not permitted as one-word cultivar epithets even though they are personal names as well. Rose and Violet are common names of genera and they too are not permitted to stand alone as cultivar epithets. Such a word may be used in an epithet of two or more words provided that it does not form the final word. (`Erica Smith', `Iris Jones', and `Rose Queen' are acceptable.)
Example: There are brugs named 'Easter Lily', 'Violett', 'Velvet Rose', 'Citronella'. None are acceptable
(9) Make sure that your epithet does not contain the botanical or common name of its genus or the common name of any species in that genus. (Rosa `Christmas Rose', Potato `Jim's Spud' and Primula `White Cowslip' are not acceptable.)
Example: A Brugmansia named 'Trish's Angel's Trumpet' would not be acceptable
Formulating a new name ..... or trying to ;-(
Thanks so much, Scoot. That's a big help.
I hope so ada.
This give me a headache every time I read it.
Just when I think I got it, I loose it !!
Do you realize that Georgia Peach is an invalid name and so is Peanut ? (too bad I love my Peanut brug ;-) )
I can imagine 'Peanut' being easy to confuse with peanuts, but is there a Peach, that is a trademark in GA?
Peanut is a peanut the same as a rose is rose and a banana is a banana and an orange is an orange.
There are a lot of older invalid names by todays standards but they will stand as they are.
3 Excedrins is what I need about now ... later Gator
We need Monika here.

thanks for this list, I have learned alot now just reading the rules! again thanks for posting it.
LOL, Scoot.
Scoot, please credit your reference, with regard to 'formulating a new name, or trying to'. Lots of good information there, thanks! Only thing I know about naming is from AKC and the Golden Retriever Club of America.
Could I name one, for instance MaunaKea White? One of my new seedlings...photos to come. It may not shake the world....but I like it!!
Sherry, I hope naming the retrievers is easier than Brugs. LOL I never thought about encountering this problem. I thought as long as another Brug wasn't named it, you could go for it. LOL After Scoot posted this, I knew there was more to it.
I'll just promise you that it will be a longgggg time before I suggest another name again!! I really did give Ada such a headache. I just hope that she forgives me for putting her through all of it.
As bad as I would like a cutting of her beautiful brug, I'll just wait till I can buy one or trade with someone.
Ada I am really and truly sorry!
Melanie
Originally she was supposed to be 'Pink Peanut' I guess that wouldnt work either.
Melanie, you didn't cause me any headache. I appreciate you contibuting to naming my Brug. This was new to me also trying to name a new Brug. Please don't give this another thought. She's named now so Scoot tell your Brug her name is Rhapsody.
These are guidelines, not rules. If you use them as rules then you will need to pay attention to the section on Do I have a new Cultivar? Did you find that part Scoot? If we want to really do things right then we would never name a lookalike unless it was an improvement of an existing cultivar. A new cultivar would not be named until it was trialed and propagated proving true to parent. And existing names that are not already registered would be up for grabs for anyone to use on a different brug and to register. First come first served. In the past names that are questionable were still accepted by sanctioning the name. That made them safe and protected. This was especially valuable to help save the older named Euro brugs such as Big, Enorm and anything with rose in the name, etc. This sanctioning is no longer required. If the ICRA wants to they can accept any name (within reason of course). I'm 100% pro-guidelines. If your gonna follow the guideliness then follow them completely.
(h) Make sure that your epithet is not, or does not contain, the Latin or common name of its genus or the common name of any species in that genus if use of such might lead to confusion. (ICNCP Art. 19.23-19.24)
(h) Make sure that your epithet is not, or does not contain, the Latin or common name of ITS GENUS : .... example: 'Betty's Brugmansia" Trish's Angel Trumpet"
or the common name of any species IN THAT GENUS .... The species within the Genus Brugmansia do not have common names
..... if use of such might lead to confusion. (ICNCP Art. 19.23-19.24)
This is my understanding of how this pertains to brugs. Am I all wet and soggy?? Don't answer that! lol!
LOL well I have truly found this reading interesting and informative, I am glad it was brought up. Thanks!
Laurrie it is definitely a very interesting subject and a passion of mine for quite awhile.
These guidelines were created to use for every genera of plant. It is up to each individual ICRA to fit the guidelines properly to their particular genus. There are parts of these guidelines that simply do not suit or cover brugmansia. Brugmansia is not comparable to any other genera of plant out there.
There's 3 groups of people ... Those who strictly follow the guidelines, those who pick and choose parts of the guidelines and those who could care less one way or the other. There are times when I could be included in the I could care less group! lol!!
Would this name work 'Practically Perfect Peanut' ? LOL
Practically perfect pink peanut ..... har har har
PPPP ... a beautiful name! lol! ... snort!
I'm gonna name my very first double pink "Hemorroid" (when I learn how to spell it)

Glad you all like the name.
I like it cause I can't say it 3 times real fast! I can't even remember what all those P's stand for! In fact ... all those P's makes me want to go and sure does help with the monthly bloats. I'd say this new PPPP cultivar is a definite improvement over any other brug! rofl :)
LOL what a hoot you all are!
Wow, talk about a tongue twister. LOL
