HOW COLD

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

How cold can the brugs get befor they get damaged, we will be in the 40s Sat. night but I have some nice seed pods and I don't want to lose them so want to leave them in the ground as long as possible.

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

mine don't get damaged, or should I say leaf damage, until it gets in the middle 30's

40 is pushing it, LOL I"d bring those babies inside.

Palm Bay, FL(Zone 9b)

Here in FL last year it got down as low as 34 degrees. No damage. My first year growing brugs was in East TN. My brugs survived 26 degrees under the eave of the garage for two nights in a row before I was able to move them to the basement. The tips of the leaves turned a little crispy but no major damage.

San Leandro, CA(Zone 9b)

Mine are good to 32 with no damage. At 28 for a few hours the top leaves get fried or I should say frozen!! But the stalks are OK. The ones I toss a sheet over do not even get that.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

OK then I guess I will leave these three in a little longer, one with 3 buds is Dr. Suess Pollinated with Snow Cone, Isobella in the front yard was Pollinated with Big Yella. one already dug up and in the house has 5 pods, Kell that is your Unknown Pink, Pollinated with M & H and then there is M & H with the two long skinny pods Pollinated with Isobella.

WHEW ya think I will live through this, it's like being pregnant, and at my age it aint easy lol.

I have been playin roulette with my Brugs & cold temps too. I have so many with buds on I just wanted to wait as long as possible to drag them in. It's a big job & I didn't want to wait until the last moment.
It had been getting close to freezing, 34, I did cover the most important ones, but it hasn't actually frosted here.
Last Tues, evening we were watching the local weather & they said there was a frost advisory for our area. Before the weather man had finished his sentence we were out digging the pots out of the ground & getting them to the GH. Whew! what a job that was it took us 3 & 1/2 hours! Good thing we have lots of yard lights & my tractor has lights. It still hasn't froze here! I left 3 out, 2 that are planted in the gound & one Dbl that is loaded with buds.
I'm sure unless it actually freezes they will not be harmed, just slow down in growth.

Cedar Key, FL(Zone 9a)

Some brugs are effected by the cold more than others
I've noticed the Versi's DO NOT like the cold

Tremont, IL(Zone 5b)

My Isabella has buds on her & I also have Kyles Giant White that is loaded with buds. This is the 2nd year for me to have brugs & the 1st time the GKW has formed buds & I was so hoping to see them bloom. Hope the weather cooperates. I don't have a GH to bring them into, & they are too big to bring into the house this year, so I'm going to have to chop them up for starts for next year. whaaaaa

Judsonia, AR(Zone 7b)

yes, I did forget to mention, I've had a heartattach this past year, and tend to not let things wait til the last minute anymore, cause you just don't know what might happen. LOL Hey, no one can call me a procrastinator any more hehe.

Gosh Kath_ann I hope your doing OK now.
I have almost all of mine in my sun room, now all but two that are too big to dig up and they are loaded with buds and a couple of seed pods, so they will be cut up.
When do you know the seed pods are ready, do they crack open, if not how do you know when to take them off. I may just have to take these off and hope they will be ripe enough.

Can you take cuttings of the branches with the pods, and do the bubbler thing with them? Maybe they will hang on until you are sure they are ripe. The one pod I picked was starting to get a little wrinkly and soft in one spot so I picked it and the seeds were ready, just for kicks I planted them all and almost every one sprouted.

OH yes, i'm completely back to normal. with a change of attitude on life to boot. Thanks .

I think there are a lot of veriables in trying to figure out how cold is too cold.

Someone said the Versis do not like the cold. Well, I find the Sangs and the Shredded White like the cold. The Sang doesn't do a whole lot of growing or anything but the SW is full of buds and the one blossom. I took them both in the house and neither one liked it at all.

I have to say here that we had about 2 weeks of night time temps in the 20s. Then last week it kicked back up into the 30s again. Well when it went down into the 20s I brought about 2/3s of them in in bubblers and some left in their pots. Lost all the buds.

Ok, the ones I left outside are a 10 ft Patricia that just this week has Yd and has a bud. A 10 ft Citronella that is covered in buds, a 7 ft Charles Grimaldi that is full of buds, and a 4 ft Harrenhauser-Garten that has never looked so healthy.

Even though we have had temps in the 20s, we have had no frost. My sister's tomatoes 4 miles away are toast. She has a Southern exposure. I am surrounded by mountains and trees on 3 sides right up to my doorstep. And trees on the 4th side. My tomatoes are just fine. They are protected.

My point is, that everyone should take stock of their own situation and not go by what someone else did. Use other peoples experiences as guidelines maybe, but think about your own environment etc.

Learned this from SherryLike. LOL finally. I must say I am watching the weather closely. Jeanette

I was surveying my Brugs today and telling myself,"if only they had 2 more weeks, I could see and smell these plants!" I too have so many buds and I've only had a few blooms this year. I'm pressing my luck, but I'm going to wait as long as I can. My fingers are crossed!

Bonnie, I will cross my fingers for you too 'cause I am so sorry I didn't wait. Mine were budded and yes, I only had a couple bloom. Well, better make a note of what we are doing for next year.

Lucy waving to Bonnie!!

I have mine outside still.....I did move them to the garage a couple nights ago when we were down in the low 40's....but it's supposed to not be so cold now for this week.....so back out they went....I have one blooming right now, and the other two have lots of buds....I am pushing it, but I can't help it.....LOL

Nashville, TN(Zone 6b)

I always pull mine in when the temp start to drop into the low 40s. I have them in the ground all summer and don't want to push myself digging them up at the last minute when it suddenly turns cold.

I lost a few blooms this week but they are all cut back and tucked in the G H for the winter. Many will recover and start blooming again by the first of the year.

My neighbor keeps hers out until they are nipped by freeze each year then she just trims off the damaged parts. She gets more fall blooms than I do, but mine bloom quicker in the spring, I am not sure that the freeze damage has anything to do with it. It may be the different types that we have.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

I still have two left to cut down or dig up, will do that today the ones I cut down and put in water looks like they will still bloom, at least they haven't fell off yet and they are starting to open.

Gardiner, ME(Zone 5a)

Hio everyone,
I usually post in the daylily and rose forums but I am hooked on brug's since my first blooms opened just recently :-)

So I am new to Brug's and only have 2 large potted plants which my son lugged in a few days ago.One plant has still buds on it,the other one has not bloomed for me since last year.It is 8-9 ft high.

Now my question ,are you saying the buds will drop or not open if moved ?
Thanks,
Brigitte

Chariton, IA(Zone 5b)

I brought my Rothkirch into the house, full of buds and leaves and it has dropped nearly all of them. I have another I brought in because it is a new double and I wanted to see the blooms open. Right.............the first bud has fallen and a few of the leaves are dropping too. I have it under a good light too. Moving them in when the outside temp is the same as the inside is supposed to help prevent leaf drop. I think Rothkirch might just be a little more tempermental than the other one. I believe it is just normal for them to drop most of the leaves and buds if the buds aren't near opening when you bring them in. Just my opinion and experience.

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

so far the plants I dug up with seed pods are doing OK pods have grown a little if they feel soft is it time to pick them or do you wait untill they drop, I have crazy seed pods, four on M&H are long and skinny, but two I have on Golden lady are short and very fat. and the five I have on Pink, & M & H are just medium.

Lewiston, CA(Zone 7b)

I moved 33 plants in the GH, but it's not heated yet, Most have buds & have lost very few leaves. I have one seed pod & I'm just not sure what to do with it. This is my first pod. I'm hoping that by not heating the GH it will continue to get colder & the leaves will all drop.
(In theory) I still have 5 out 4 planted in the ground & one in the pot, It's a dbl & full of buds, I really want to see what color before pulling it up. Although all the others pulled up are fine. I have been putting beach umbrells over them @ night incase of frost, which we have had none. The ones still in the ground will be cut down & I'm leaving the stumps in & mulching & covering them to see just what happens.
So how will I know when this pod is ready?
Bj
