Allow me to be the first to welcome DepartureBay from Nanaimo to Dave's Garden. Back up to 148 subscribers from Canada.
Welcome DepatureBay
Welcome Departure Bay, I am also in Nanaimo. There seems to be a few island folk here.
Cindy
welcome from across the water, Departure Bay. I promise not to make any bad jokes about your schedules.
There seems to be a lot of BC people here, makes it nice, when you start wistfully viewing alll the plants available down south!!!
Welcome from Alberta!
Welcome from Heather in Victoria. We almost have enough on the island and nearby places for a mini' round up of our own !
Welcome DepartureBay, from Ginny on Ontario's West Coast :-) Hope you have a great time here at Dave's Garden!
LOL, welcome Departure Bay. I hear there is a three sailing wait right now. Hopefully nothing will break down. Sorry everyone, but Departure Bay has to be one of the busiest places around this weekend.
Welcome DBay, to Dave's garden. We've got lots of CDN folks that add info here, and we have fun. Tell us about your garden.
Linda in Victoria.
Already sent a welcoming D-mail, but I'll add my welcome here as well. Nice to have another Canadian with us.

Welcome to Dave's DepartureBay.

Welcome, Departure Bay from (near the other end--Horseshoe Bay)
Deep Cove (N Van). You will enjoy yourself, learn much, and probably teach much. Happy Dave's. Dawn
Welcome Departure Bay from further up island.
Hey Heather, I like the idea of a mini roundup. I think you might be right, our numbers in this area are definitely getting up there. That would be fun.
Sandy
Welcome to Daves Garden, Departure.
From Riverview, NB.
Thank you everyone for the welcome and sorry I wasn't able to send thanks sooner. I'm new to Dave's Garden and needed some help with the links - but I think I finally got it, thanks to echoes! I'm so new to gardening and am not sure what I'm doing half the time, but I now have acquired a number of plants, some purchased and some given to me, but I need to learn all of their names. Also, I am a container gardener as I have only a small balcony that is in the shade, so I have my challenges and I'm sure the learning curve will be straight up. I can use all the help I can get.
Thanks again to everyone!!!
Hello everyone! I'm new to Daves Garden and am new to the west coast "Nanaimo". I have a small balcony in the shade which I am trying to decorate with some small container plants. Hopefully I will be able to keep them growing. This is my first attempt at sending a pix. of my first couple of plants (ornamental pepper and lavender).
Welcome Departure Bay
Good job on the photo.
It looks like someone has some painting skill ...did you paint your pot?
Gardening is all learning and sometimes knowing something won't work is the bigest barrier soooooo just go for it and you will be surprised. There is a wealth of information here and folks to help with your questions so ask away.
Ann
Here, here Ann! I agree totally about too much knowledge sometimes being a barrier when it comes to gardening. I actively resist acquiring some types of "expert knowledge" and go along in blissful ignorance doing things the experts later tell me, "You can't do that. It won't work." But it did work :-) That's not to say I don't try to learn as much as I can, especially from the experts and very knowledgeable. LOL I just try something I want to try anyway, regardless of what I'm told. Life is all about the risks, right?

Departure Bay, where have you come from? You will love it here on the wet west coast. I've only been here two years but it is great.
Cindy
Welcome again DepartureBay. I'm sure you're going to find out everything you need to know about your plants from this group. I noticed you don't have your hardiness zone; here's a link to the Canadian hardiness zones so you can enter it. -

Christine
ceedub: thank you for the hardiness zone map. I think I am in 7b, is that correct? (the colour of the map is hard to match).
klinger: I came from Winnipeg Manitoba on September 29/05.
annabell 52: I did not paint the pot, I bought it in the dollar store in Winnipeg and thought it looked cute, although, I now realize through reading on container gardening that the ornamental pepper plant should be in a plain pot as it takes away from the beauty of the plant itself. Like everyone said, you learn something everyday and that was my lesson for today. Thanks so much for your kind comments and if someone could confirm that Nanaimo is 7b, according to the link, I would really appreciate it. I'll have to learn how to enter it in the system.
Departure Bay, when I looked at the map that's also what I thought is that Nanaimo is a 7b. I guess we both could be wrong,.I moved here from Calgary two years ago, I was born and raised in Winnipeg, Charleswood area mostly. There are lot's of people from all over the prairies here in Nanaimo, so you will likely meet a few transplants in your travels.Your ornamental pepper looks great in the pot you have chosen for it. I don't think there are many garden rules which can't be broken. That's part of what makes your garden unique.
Cindy
klinger: My husband brought up an interesting point. When you enlarge the map, the area called Nanaimo is not located on the water, so when we enlarged the area just east of the word Nanaimo on the map, we noticed that along the coastline or waterfront, which is where we are located, the area shows a couple of areas of 6b, mostly 7a and and a little patch of 7b on the waterfront that looks like it could be "departure bay". Where abouts in Nanaimo are you located? I'm going to send a question to that website and ask them the question. Is there a way on Dave's garden to find out flowers and plants that grow in specific zones? Thanks so much for your help.
You can go to advanced search and specifiy zone 7 here: http://davesgarden.com/pf/advanced.php?sname=Plants
To make the search a little quicker (and less overwhelming;) I would limit it by choosing some of the other options listed as well (ie. highlight one of the plant categories as well as the zone and then hit search).

I edited the above to correct the information posted....I remembered Dave had changed the advanced search options.
Departure Bay, I am very close to Long Lake, only about a block away from the water.I have about a 9000 sq foot yard. I was fortunate there were lots of shrubs and perennials here when I moved in. I have how ever moved and changed all kinds of things since I have been here. I had a kind neighbor send in a bouquet to the Nanaimo Bulletin this week about how the neighborhood enjoyed my yard and all the tropical plants in it. I try to do a lot of large leafed and interesting colored plants. A book I picked up the first year I moved here was ABC's of West coast gardening. Author is Mary Palmer, I think I got it from Chapters, and its quite good, covers all sorts of things . I had never limed a lawn until I moved here, or been able to plant spring bulbs in pots and had them survive the winter. You will really like all the things that will grow with ease here.We can get together for a coffee sometime if you like, I am big into trading seeds cuttings etc, and always have extras for a new gardener.
Cindy
