Stinky Dog Breath/Yucky Teeth

mid central, FL(Zone 9a)

here's a tip i discovered a couple of years ago when it was time for Bosco to have a dental cleaning. you know all that tartar accumulation leads to stinky breath, bad teeth and big vet bills.

i go to the pet store (or grocery stores even carry them now) and buy the shrink-wrapped real knuckle bones. they have different sizes for dogs. the good thing about these is they don't break off and splinter. they are great gnawing bones.

i give bosco his bone on the porch 'cause they do have trace amounts of fat altho it's not too messy. after an hour or less, i take it away and wrap it in saran and put it in the freezer. that's where i keep it because otherwise they go rancid. i take it out once a week and he has his dental treat and you can't believe how clean their teeth stay and sweet breath, o my!
he didn't have that dental and has never had one. my vets (old and new) have remarked that for a 9 yr.old dog he has beautiful and perfect teeth.

bosco is so good. i call the bone, "Boney Baby" and he knows when i say "Boney Baby is going to bed now" that that's the end of it. if you have a dog that won't give it up then that would be a problem.. also a problem if you have more than one dog. don't give them the bones in the same room unless you are really sure there won't be a problem. the little dogs seem to be the ones that want to take your arm off when Boney Baby goes to bed! LOL just thought i would pass this along. debi
