Butterfly activity has slowed considerably over the past few weeks, yet I still have a few passersby. I bought a 'Michelia champaca' tree (4') about 4 months ago strictly for the flowering attributes of the plant. To my surprise, my wife and I just found these a few minutes ago. I did not know this was a larval source for butterflies. Question is . . . which one? I have giant Swallowtails on the 'Hercules Club' and Limes, I have had several Palamedes and Eastern Tiger Swallowtails on my 'Sweet Bay', and a Spice Bush Swallowtail on a 'Soursop' before the wasp ate the larva before I could cage them. I believe it may be one of the three aforementioned butterflies, but they are too small for me to identify at this stage. I will raise them in a mesh cage to be for certain of whom the responsible parent may be but I did not want to have to wait that long. The 'Michelia Champaca' or perfume tree (family Magnoliaceae) is in the same family as the Sweet bay so it may well be a Eastern Tiger or a Palamedes.
Thanks
Please ID a late season caterpillar
I don't think you will need to wait more than a couple of days to find out which it is. I think it's the Giant Swallowtail.
