Chilling Tulip Bulbs?

Pleasureville, KY(Zone 6a)

Do tupip bulbs need to be chilled before planting? Have not had much luck with them. Then next question, do you dig them when they finish blooming? I'm Zone 6. Any info will be appreciated.

No they do not need to be chilled.
No you should not dig them up after they have flowered unless you just are going to treat them as annuals and throw them away. Leave the foliage until it dies off so the bulb storesup new nutrients after flowering ready for the next year.

Bonnie, they will chill in the ground over winter where you live.

Most tulips respond well to a deep planting, this practice usually insures a good show in following seasons. I've had good return rates when planted 8" down.

fancyvan, darius & jmorth, thanks for your responses. I have had tulips before, but has been awhile, and had really forgotten how to treat them.

what about chilling in frig to force indoors?

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

I do a lot of tulips in pots that way every year. The ones that respond best to indoor forcing are the early singles and early doubles. They'll need about 16 weeks at 36 - 45 degrees.
