Purchased two rhizomes of healthily growing Stuttgart canna in a water garden section of a nursery in Michigan. I cut them down, packed and brought them home to TX. I have repotted them in a big PLUGGED pot w/o drainage, with about half soil, half pebbles (trying to mimic the way they were potted at the greenhouse), and filled the pot w/water.
Both rhizomes came back nicely, with both having new growth and about 4-5 leaves each since August. I occasionally drain the water out--nervous about root rot--and the water smells kind of rotten.
Am I doing this right? I assume it's not entirely wrong since the rhizomes are growing?? I've tried to grow this very difficult canna variety in the ground before, without success. Later read that it prefers to be waterlogged.
Any advice anybody? I'm a complete empty vat of water gardening knowledge........

Growing water canna.....sort of.....need advice!
only a small amount of water over the top of the pot......afternoon shade, leaves burn easily
So, it's ok to keep the pot full of water then? I've already added Epsom Salts to the water in hopes of helping w/the leaf burn......
Did you use pond soil? It's a dense, clay like soil that packs to hold water, without being drippy soggy...
My actual pond plants are in pots with clay soil, and they do fine in the pond. I do not know how the lack of moving water might affect yours though.
ps... you have d-mail.
