Sad Thing

Springfield, OH(Zone 5b)

Came home from Indiana and my DH took me outside to see what happened to one of my seedlings. It was about 7 foor tall and had a gazzillion buds.. Not sure what knocked it down.. maybe a deer or our darling labrador..sigh..

Darn.....that's too bad. Did you get to see any blooms open other than what I see on the ground? I've put big pieces like this in a barrel of water and they will go ahead and bloom.

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

OH NO!! yes please stick in a bucket or something and maybe it will root and still try to give you a showing!!

Grass Lake, MI(Zone 5a)

I am so sorry ... stick it in water. You may still see some blooms.

Kannapolis, NC(Zone 7b)

Wow, what bad luck. Hope it roots for you.

Herbstein, Germany(Zone 5a)

Oh no, I am sorry! Do as it has been suggested and place it in a bucket of water. It is important to remove all of the large leaves.

Springfield, OH(Zone 5b)

When I got back home my DH had already put it into water. It doesn't look very happy though. It was still attached a bit to the stem and the leaves were still full and the tip actually started to rise off the ground towards the sun.. but now it's just all wilty. I think I should make a fresh cut on the stem? I am thinking the part that was exposed dried out and isn't wicking water on that side

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

Yes, I would suggest a fresh cut, also maybe remove some of the larger leaves on the plant.

Best of Luck!

Corte Madera, CA

sorry to hear about your brug. update on this? happy ending, i hope.

Springfield, OH(Zone 5b)

update, all the foliage and flowers/buds shriveled up and fell off. Now I have the largest cutting in the world.. lol. well.. maybe someone has done a bigger one but it's my first 6 footer. Actually, I am trying to decide whether to compost it and just dig up the three suckers that remain in the ground. Or else take a piece off above the "y" of this one and compost the suckers. Any thoughts?

Dundee, OH(Zone 5b)

I think personally I would take some cuttings of the woodier to root as well as parts of the above "Y", that way you can see which way roots easier for you :)

Best of luck!

SE Arky, United States(Zone 8a)

What a shame - I know exactly how you feel! I've had that happen several times this year and at least two of the beheadings might have been avoided if I had staked them with longer stakes....

Springfield, OH(Zone 5b)

I looked at it more closely and above the "y" is pretty green. This seedling had sent up a couple side shoots and they are still connected to the root system so I think I will just dig up those and put them in a pot to bring inside for the winter.. lol.. DH keeps asking me "If you plan on bringing all the brugs inside..where are we supposed to live?" he's soooooo funny

Greensburg, IN(Zone 6a)

So sorry to hear of your problem, I would cut the top off and put in water to get roots, and cut the rest up in long lengths put them in water, who knows you could end up with lots of plants.
