Hi, all -
I am looking to buy, trade, or beg for a rooted start of this heirloom variety of begonia. I just love it and was given 2 leaves off a dear friend's last winter - but was unable to root them. I have scoured the web looking for a reliable source...no luck. Even bought what was supposed to be one on ebay..turned out it wasn't. sigh. Anybody got one of these they can part with? Here's the one I want..

Searching for Begonia Erythrophylla - heirloom variety
Hi Diane,
Glasshouse works http://www.glasshouseworks.com/trop-b.html has this begonia for $3.50, scroll down the page - they're listed alphabetically.
Not sure if you are looking for the 'plain ol beefsteak' or the 'helix' variety. My 'helix' is pretty small, and I have already cut her back for a trade, but I may be able to find another in Nov. when I go to the Strybing Arboretum plant sale, most plants are $5-8. (11/12/05) I can keep my eyes open.
Kartuz may also have it. here's the link to the dg pages with sources (and links to sources) http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/548473/
OH Thank you so much, begoniacrazii -- that is the one I want at Glashouse works the plain one. Unfortunately, there is a $10 minimum order so I will have to wait awhile as there is I don't have room to buy other stuff right now. But I really appreciate you showing me where I can actually get one.
Thanks again

I am pretty sure that I have the begonia you are looking for. Years ago a friend gave me one she had started from a cutting. Since then I have started several from cuttings and given them away to friends. I would be happy to trade one of my plants for one of yours. I am new to this list so I don't know exactly how to go about this.
Sounds great KangySue - I will send you a Dave's Email with info on what I have.
Diane
just wanted to post and thank everyone for their responses. Kangysue and I have done a trade and I now have this begonia I was looking for.

Susan,
I cut short woody stems from the mother plant and stuck the cut stem into some potting soil, covered the pot with a clear plastic sandwich bag, and sealed the bag to the pot with a rubber band. Then I put the pot in a sunny window and waited a couple of months until I saw some new shoots sprouting. It was pretty easy!
