Here is what the coffee trees are looking like!!! DH is out there picking in the rain!!!
It's Gonna be a Banner Crop
BTW - if any of you guys are looking for a vacation next spring.... the Big Island Assn. of Nurserymen is having it's annual sale sometime in March...it is the one sale (Friday pm. and Sat. a.m.) where the growers present their finest and newest for sale. Proceeds go to a scholarship program at University. It is always a lot of fun and an absolute mad house...a real buying frenzy!!! We Master Gardeners work as checkout and get to hit the sale 1/2 hour before the public. Anyone want to be a MG?
Carol
That's sounding good. Got to visit my sister anyway.
I haven't been to the big Island for a couple years now. Have friends in Kauai I need to see too. wonder how I'd pack plants!
Rj
Boxes work! AND inspection is easy....
Carol
I'm a MG can I come? LOL.... I'll need a vacation now that the temps are dropping into the 40's brrrrrrrrrr HATE THE COLD>..
Ohhh, I want a coffee plant! And a Hawaian vacation!
I could probably arrange for "associates" to work with the MGs.... Let me know. It is a madhouse, the energy is fabulous and the plants are awesome.
speak up Kyle ....
You left Kyle speechless with the possibliities Carol!!! Sounds soo great. I could get a few AeAe bananas and some wild Ti plants I have been lusting after.
Kell...the variegated 'ae'ae bananas are NOT that common, even here! We have some but by the time the Mama dies and the keiki is viable, it is nearly 7' tall and impossible to ship. The best way to find them is tissue culture. I will ask around.
Ti plants....easy. Just c'on over.
I will talk to our 'coordinator' with the MGs and see if anything is set up yet and how many helpers he needs. Propbably won't know until Feb.
The Sale is fun.... Hope it works out....
Aloha,
Carol
AlohaHoya,
I tried coffee by seed and it did not work although Puerto Rico is known for coffee.
How did you start yours and do you know of a nursery out there that sells plants?
I bought my purple sugercane from a guy in Hilo that is doing great :)
K
K - you need to plant the coffee cherry once it has been pulped, and preferrably with the parchment off. When we process the cherries, they need to ferment for 24-48 hours to get rid of the slimey stuff around the bean...and we pour off all the floaters. Half of the floaters sprout when we put them out as mulch!!! Send me an dmail and I can send you a tree or two.
Carol
I was gonna say I'm a MG too... :-)
c'mon over. let me talk to our 'boss'.
Do you know what week in Mar? I'm currently bidding for vacation for next year.
Rj
NO...but I will find out...nothing is ever really planned too far in advance over here!!!
Round up in Hawaii!!!!
Don't know the dates of the BIAN sale yet...but our "leader" said it would be kool having 'visiting MGs' working with us!....
Carol
