Does anyone know how I can keep my bulbs away from squirrels and other little creatures. As soon as I put a bulb in the ground they eat it. The powders or squirrel away products don't work. HELP HELP!!!
Planting Bulbs
I've heard of people putting chicken wire over them, just under the soil. ??? I haven't tried it but if I had that problem, I would try that first. tt
I see they are selling the chicken wire cages at walmart and other big box stores and on line, too...
also, you might try daffodils and other critter resistant bulbs---muscari, allium, frittalaria, camassia, among others...rather than tulips.

around here tulips are hopeless...if the squirrels don't get the bulbs, when the leaves come up the rabbits and deer will eat them...
Tabasco, thanks for the tip - is it possible to add the mentioned bulbs in front or around my tulips to protect them from the moles and squirrels? I don't mind planting the daffodils and all - but I am afraid that if I plant tulips and daf together the squirrels are smart enough to push the unwanted bulbs aside and eat the ones they want - Unless, you're saying by putting the unwanted bulbs as a shield the squirrels will stay away. I hope that's why you're saying.
Well, rosemallow--
I have heard of people using daffodils, fritallaria, and alliums, especially, as a kind of deterrent around the tulips and crocuses, but I personally do not know how that will work.
It's the voles that are so disruptive to the bulbs, I believe moles are carnivores.
The hardware cloth/chicken wire barrier approaches seem to be the most effective deterrents for underground varmints. Then the 'deer scram' and 'liquid fence' type sprays and sprinklings are somewhat reliable deterrents for above ground marauders...
I have just given up tulips and crocuses and gone with the other bulbs exclusively.
Unless I plant in protected pots.
I have used daffodils exclusively to protect my other bulbs and the strategy has worked wonderfully. I put a daffodil bulb in every bulb hole and the squirrels don't go anywhere near them. I don't have moles to worry about.
Yes, that's my secret too, one daff to every bulb hole. Don't know if I have any tulips left, I put my new hosta bed over the spot I had yellow & red clausiana tulips, muscari and small daffs. The muscari (grape hyacinth) are fine! (their foliage pops out now), maybe need to replenish others. Love this primary color combo, very paint box bright after dreary winter!
