Confederate Rose

Laurens, SC(Zone 8a)

I have several of these grown from seed--one from last year that never flowered and 2-3 this year from seed. It is 1 October, the other trees of this in my area (upstate SC-Laurens zones 7/8) are all blooming and full of buds and I still have no flowers or buds. Maybe it is just a little late?? Or does it take a couple years to flower when grown from seeds?? Maybe I am just a bit too impatient?? Thanks! Bonnie

It is a true perennial, give it another season.
Where did you find the seeds? I have looked in a lot of places

I have been trying to find 'Butterball', a double yellow for ages..

That is normal. The older they get the more they bloom. Many are not tolerant of pruning. Our neighbor lost all that she pruned. They usually bloom some after the first two years, and our big one, which is 20 feet tall, probably has more than 200 blooms and buds. It is a striking plant.

Dedda--I traded for the seeds--in fact I still have a BUNCH of them. Want some?? dmail me your address and I will send them rigt off!! If you ever find that "Butterball", it sounds liek something I would LOVE!! I will ask on Hibiscus thread if anyone has seed or seedlings for that. A confederate rose??

Thanks to you both for your comments and advice!! The ones I grew last year from seeds did cut to just above the ground I think so I was lucky they cam back, eh? And that is probably why I lost the Cranberry Hibiscus I had last year--I cut it to the ground too. It did not come back like it would have if I had left it alone. Beginners mistakes--live and learn! hehehe I know better now!! A LOT better to do pruning of trees and shrubs in Spring since it will encourage it to grow. Pruning them in Fall will open them up to frost damage and other detrimental things!! Prune ROSES in the Fall though!! hehehe Bonnie
