OK NOW WHAT DO I DO?

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

I think that this poor puppy has a sucker, but it's doing better than the rest of the plant. Question.....should I leave it or do surgery?

Thanks

Hap

PS. another ?....I have another that is just two shoots after the Y. Is this OK? Do you want a pic?

Well Hi HAP!!!! So good to see you here. Your brug is looking good.

I would say it depends what look you want. If you want a standard pompom look, I would cut it off at base. Or if the sucker looks better, cut off the mother plant. LOL

I love suckers. They usually do grow great guns and make the best standard, which I prefer to a big messy bush. I cut them off at the base when they are the size I want.

I find they grow faster on the mother plant and Y faster too so I leave them on there till they have attained the size I want. Then I stick them in a 5 gallon can, water and leave in all shade to root. I water only when dry. I take off all the leaves but the small tip ones. I f there is lot sof Ying, I take the Ys down to just 1 or 2 form the first Y.

If you leave a lot on top, it tmay wilt a litte but it usually stands up soon.

I am unsure what you are asking in your second question, so yes picture please.

Thank-x Kell ,That was a question I was having, just waiting & someone would surely answer it. I have some that are very large (1 1/2 - 2"), & those will root in soil? I have been scared to death to cut them off in fear of losing them, & not sure if I should put them in water or soil.
Most of my plants have buds now. I'm just hoping to see blooms before I have to pull them up for frost. So far the weather has been great!

Hi Kell...

I have the 5 on the side of the house growing in between some old citrus fruit trees. The fruit trees are about done and very old and will be coming out as soon as the brugs get bigger....so.............. I think that I want bush brugs so that they shade that side of the house, south, and provide some shade for some lower plants.

What would happen if I leave the sucker ON the plant?

This is the pix of the other brug with just two shoots. BTW, these are not the two original shoots. When it was just a baby a frond from the palm next to it fell and lopped off on the arm and then another one grew in it's place. So confusing....

And as long as I have your attention, heheheh, what about this datura?

It is over 5' and doing well. What happens now? Does it die in the winter, which I don't have?

Well, that would be an interesting thing, I wonder what they do , do without winter? I have the dbl purples & whites etc. & they all die in winter (I have a winter) but one white one keeps coming back up from the roots.
This will be interesting. Keeps us posted & we will all find that question out!

Yea, really. I have no clue about datura. They die here too. Let us know when it gets bigger than your coleus, Hap. LOL

If you leave it on, more will join it and before you know it, you will have a big bush!! A big blooming bush!! LOL
