Alocasia Frydek Crossed with Macrorrhiza

Louisville, KY

Well I figure it was time to start digging these up. It also made for a great time to get some pictures of these. Their are 19 plants from this hybrid I did last year. I am just now getting pups to have propagated. I always have trouble picking out the best ones. Specially now when they are not yet mature. The first pic is the father it is not a common alocasia frydek that I used the true name for frydek is micholitziana and their are aparently 4 forms of it. The most common form I believe is the least attractive form. The form I have has narrow velvet leaves with a bit of ruffles on them and zebra striped stems and white veins. A much harder form to find due to it never being TCed.

Now the seedlings all look fairly similar no huge differences right off hand. Some have better marking on the stems others have a better sheeth look to the leaf. I would not call it a velvet leaf but it is softer and reflects light a bit differently sparkles some? The veins are a bit lighter maybe they will brighten up more with age.

you can kind of see the sheeth to this leaf with the sun reflecting.

I sure like the looks of the father plant. Brian, what temperature do you keep your greenhouse at?

Louisville, KY

no colder than 55f usually stays 60 to 85

Cool! I didn't know these two would hybridize. I hope you can create a hybrid with big leaves that have the white veins of Frydek/micholitziana.
The 'Frydek' I have has heart-shaped, velvety green leaves (almost an iridescent green) with pure white veins, but the stems are green. It grows very well though.

TomH3787--do you happen to have any pups?? Is this one that doesn't like to be watered?? I guess the African Mask types like to be misted on the leaves but not very heavily watered like most other ears do. I don't know a lot about these different types, I just collect them cause I like the leaves!! You know?! Yours sounds very nice!! This
Alocasia Frydek type seems to be similar to the Purple African Mask I bought recently at ebay. I think I need to repot it but still waiting for some advice/tips from our resident expert--bwilliams!! hehehe I do NOT want this ear to die. I want to do whatever I can to get it to grow big and strong, mature!! It will be indoors mostly--maybe if it is still healthy and hopefully bigger next summer I MIGHT take it outside for a bit but not sure if that is a good thing to do or not?!! Bonnie

The other frydek is very nice I have a lot of it growing as well. But have not had good luck with it flowering for me yet. As with your alocasia plant. Most like to be a bit root bound. The best I have seen them grown would be a friends nursery were most the ones you buy at the stores come from. His system is very nice. The plants are potted up in promix and feritlized. The plants drain very fast and are watered 1 or 2 times a day. They are on a very nice watering system of tubes and drippers to each pot. I would not regularly tell people to water them that much but his are in hot greenhouses with bright sun and once watered I would think they are bone dry in about 1 to 2 hours. It never gets below 70f and they a grow like weeds. Many of these can be made to grow in water though many of you will swear that they die right off and your right they do but if you water is heated and circulated they do great. The main thing with these plants is they dont like it cold or even chilly they like it nice and warm or hot. That includes the root systems. Radiant heat is idea for these plants. That is what we are putting in two of my new greenhouses as soon as possible.

I assume you were answering me about the African Mask above?? My plant is in a 4" pot has 2 leaves and one that has been starting to open for at least a month without opening yet! hehehe MAybe I should put it in the mini greenhouse (it is a tall stand up one with 4 shelves) on my back porch--it stays very warm back there due to the hot water heater out there.
