Time to bring in some of the Ears

North Vancouver, BC(Zone 8b)

These guys will stay out for awhile. I've never been able to get a really good pic of the black leaves. They seem to suck up the light.

All the Mickey's have come in. We had almost 100mm of rain yesterday and didn't want them to drown. I must have 25 pots of them.

These guys never got out of their pots this summer but definitely need to be inside now.

Liz, do you keep most of your tropicals in pots? And partly shaded or in full sun up there? I will most likely be moving up there in 4 years when DH retires, to the Sunshine Coast, Sechelt area and since I am just getting into tropicals, I am wondering how they will do up there. I see that you grow many so I will have to pick your brain when the time comes. I am already stressing thinking about how I am going to get most of my things across the border! Will probably need one truck just for plants and they better let me get them thru with whatever certificate I will need or I will throw a major hissy. LOL!

The Polly's are potted up and coming in.

Frydek coming in too. I lucked out and it pupped with a variegated Frydek so definitely not taking chances with it.

I have a lot of these. They are picky here for some reason.

Longiloba. This one went dormant on me one year and took more than a year to come back.

Your ears are so pretty Liz. Is the first one Illustrus? Mine isn't that pretty, too hot here I think.

Sue all the colocasias, xanthosomas and most of the alocasias are in the ground. They grow so much bigger than in pots. I don't have any anthuriums or philodendrons. I haven't been bitten by that bug yet. Most of the other tropicals are in pots. I'm not a big fan of digging plants up but make an exception for the ears. The alocasias are in part shade, the colocasias in full sun. Basjoo, Maurellii, full sun. Gingers, sun.
You'll like Sechelt. Do you go up there often?

Yes it is Susie. I tried to take pics of Black Magic and it just disappears into the picture. Illustris will get to stay out for at least another month. Black Magic will come in sooner.

Use a flash to take pictures of Black Magic. My camera also has a setting if the subject is darker than the background, but I forget to change it half the time.
Your Illustrus is gorgeous. I think mine is too dry.

yes we do go up every couple of years if we can to visit in-laws. All of hubby's family is up there. We lived in Sechelt & Gibsons for a year back in '81 but economy was real bad then so we came back to Calif.. Wiished we had stuck in out but I had a toddler then and missed my Mom. Now that toddler has a family of her own and they are planning to move up within 2 years, want to raise their kids with all the cousins up there in a beautiful area besides the city. Otherwise I would probably try to stay in Calif but I have to be near my grandbabies! Besides, real estate is too expensive here for the property I am wanting for my gardens.

The Sechelt real estate prices have skyrocketted in the last few years. Especially if you want to live on the water.
Thanks Susie. I think I need a new camera. The one I'm using is about 5 years old and they are so much better now.

Naw, Yeah I know, waterfront too expensive. We hope to maybe purchase the other 2 acres from brother/sister in law. They are gardeners too so we can combine efforts. That's my dream anyways! Here is their view out the kitchen window, back deck.

Beautiful view. Two acres would be fun to work with. Especially if you can bring up all your plants.
