Support

Brookeville, MD(Zone 7a)

I have a large cultiver of hardy hibiscus and they flopped terribly this year b/c they're second year plants so they were pretty big.

They're so big and heavy, I can't think of what to use as a support next year. Any ideas? Specialty supports?

Hi Michelle,
I used some concrete reinforcement wire to make cages for mine (leftover from making tomato cages). It has 6 inch square openings, so it pretty much disappears from sight under the leaves. You can cut it with fence cutters to whatever dimension you want. Bend the cut edges back in a loop to secure the circle opening together. Cut the very bottom wire off and stick the 6 inch wires in the ground to secure the cage. You can also use rabbit wire fencing....easier to work with, but more visible when in use.

Check your local nursery for peony cages(look like heavy weight tomato cages) put out before the stems start to grow and keep a watch to make sure the stems grow up inside the hoop.
