Muskegon, MI(Zone 5a)

Ok, Im one of the brug growers who have never seen a seed pod on any of the brugs Ive grown..after 5 years Im seeing some on my Miss Anna....they arent very big but our weather is going to turn bad in hopefully a month or longer..it could go bad on us at anytime...can somebody tell me what to do?..will there be enough time for it to mature?..I havent any ideas on any of this..and Im thinking its going to be crossed with my isabella...Judy

Congratulations, Momma! LOL. It usually takes at least 3 months for a pod to mature. I have some that take 4 to 6 months. I notice in the fall and winter they may take even longer.

You could dig the plant and bring it into your house to a bright window, away from heaters. Use it as your Christmas tree, it already has the ornaments. LOL. I would cut it back some too if you do it to compensate for the root loss. Then it might not drop too many leaves and maybe the pods, to conserve energy to keep the stems alive.

I have heard some say they can keep the pods on even cuttings, but I have never had that luck unless the pod is already big when I take the cuttings.

If they are on several limbs, you could try several ways. Using a bubbler to root it , and even airlayering a limb. If you have a month, it may root by then.

If you try airlaying, use silver foil, it keeps the moss warmer and encourages rooting, I notice.

Maybe others have some ideas. GOOD LUCK Judy!! Let us know what you do and if it works. Always good to learn new tricks that work.

Kell, I just went out and took a picture of the pod...and low and behold there are pods on the isabella right next to it..they both had to cross to each other since they are the only 2 brugs in that area...you think?....I am so new to this concept of pollinating and what you do...my isabella has been so productive that its on its 2nd blush and starting to get more buds for a third....we are in Michigan where its getting pretty cool right now so i may see a few more blooms...Judy

So where is the picture Judy? LOL. I want to see it. I love pods. I love the look of them hanging down and the feel of them. I am forever manhandling mine!! LOL

Could be that is the cross. A busy bee or moth!! Don' t those 2 brugs look similar? Frosty types? I think someone had a similar cross and the flowers were just huge.

Good for you!

Such a cute little pod. A podette! Don't you just love them?

Yes, Miss Anna is so big. I like her better than Frosty, I think. Isabella is a flower hog too. You may get an everblooming one, nonstop!!

Judy, if you have some flowers, harvest the pollen. label it and freeze it. Buy some kids' paintbrushes at K-Mart. Then early in the season at your first flowers, you can pollinate them and have them ripen before frost.

I am collecting all my best pollen right now for early spring flowers.

Kell where do I keep it and do I swab all over the area?....Im a newbie on this...any websites to read up on it?...Judy

I have to go to work now. But if no one else posts on this I will sure do so when I get home. It is fun and easy!!! You just clip the anthers and put them in homemade wax paper or small glassine envelopes labeled and then in a freezer bag or 2.

Susie had a great site on pollinating. I can't remember if she also told how to harvest the pollen.

Oh Judy, I just remembered I need to finish this. I am so tired now and have to be up in a few hours. I will send you a site to look at. What questions do you have? Email me and I will do my best.
