Vieques, PR(Zone 11)

I have one Daisy Tree up for grabs.

I am looking for Heliconia or Gingers.

I would love to try that one, what kind of gingers are you looking for? I have peachy colored Hedychiums ( two different shades), various unnamed curcumas and a good sized Costus Barbatus.

Alice,

I would love a cutting of the Costus Barbatus if you can spare it.

I got your address off of the address exchange. I am doing a mailing on monday. It will go out priority.

Thanks, I have been wanting a Spiral Ginger for a long while but I have not been able to find it locally.

Karen, Thanks, I will look forward to it. I will send the Costus plant priority as soon as I can get one of those large triangular boxes. Our little country PO does not carry the big ones, I will have to get one in Beaufort.
We have been South Carolinians for most of the past 40+ years with the exception of a few years on the Wicomico on the Eastern Shore. I know what you mean about that snow. Small world isn't it?

I understand about the boxes. I just used my last triangle box myself.

I just recently put an order in online for boxes for priority mail. If you go to www.usps.com they will sedn them to you free.

Our small PO only has Priority envelopes. For that matter just to let you know we don't even has mail delivery here. We have to go to the PO to pick it up. Our road that we live on has no name and we do not have a traffic light or fast food on the island.

It sounds wonderful; your own jungle paradise.

I do have the smaller triangle boxes but this is a large plant. I am trying to downsize the number of plants I have in containers. Every time a hurricane starts heading East I go a little crazy trying to stash the pots so they don't blow through my (or my neighbor's) windows. I suspect you know that drill. Then, every Spring I seem to root every cutting and plant every seed; you would think I would know better. :-)

Beaufort was a serious consideration for retirement but I started going down to Hunting Island in the late 70's and by 99' there was just too many people.

We went to the eastern shore almost weekly when the weather was good aboard out trawler. What a wonderful area, to bad it snows there.

Have a good weekend.

Hunting Island is eroding at a faster rate than any other place in the US. No wonder you thought it was crowded, the island is getting smaller. LOL

No, I know what you mean about the crowds, there are still a lot of beautiful spots hidden away down dirt lanes but they are disappearing fast. All the paper companies are divesting themselves of their vast land holdings and the developers are in a frenzy.

You can always move to Vieques and garden 365 days a year :))))

Do you have a recipe for Frogmore Stew you could share with me?

Frogmore Stew
Serves 12

Supposedly, the fellow who owned Gay Seafood (shrimp boats on your right on the way out to Hunting Island) was the cook on reserve duty in the 40's and created this recipe out of leftovers. Saint Helena Island used to be called Frogmore, hence the name.

5 quarts of water
1/4 cup of seafood seasoning like Old Bay

4 lbs. small red potatoes
2 lbs. smoked sausage or kielbasa
6 ears fresh corn broken into 3 or 4 pieces
4 lbs. fresh, unpeeled shrimp
1 stick butter*

Bring the water and seasoning to a boil and add potatoes; boil for 10 minutes.
Add sausage, corn and butter and cook 8 - 10 minutes until potatoes are done.
Add shrimp and cook about 4 minutes until they are all pink .
Drain, sprinkle with more Old Bay and serve with seafood sauce and some crusty bread.

* Alice's notes
1. If my husband is cooking he adds the whole stick of butter if I am the chef it gets left out and it is hard to tell the difference.
2. I like to brown the sausage before adding it, it gives it a richer flavor than plain boiled saugage does.
3. When we have plenty of crabs (or even crab claws) I dump them in too; usually around the time I add the sausage and corn.
4. Most folks around here use Hillshire Farms sausage, I use Anduoille (sp) when I can get it.

Thanks, it has been years since I have had it.

I will make this for our next cookout.

The last time I was there (about 3-4 years ago) we stayed at the Frogmore Inn. I love all of those small family owned restaurants on that road.

What is the name of the restaurant as you go over to Lady's Island on the right? I have had some great meals there.

Did the military take you down there?

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

No military, we have lived all over SC, and our original plans were to retire to Charleston, where we lived back in the 70's; but as you mentioned, SC is getting pretty crowded and northern Beaufort county still had some beautiful coastline available.

Are you talking about the Whitehall Plantation restaurant? It is now called Bateaux and that land (prime waterfront) is slated for development soon.

Or perhaps you mean the Steamer, where you can get awesome Frogmore Stew.

Vieques, PR(Zone 11)

Neither of those names rings a bell but this was back in the 80's that I ate there so it could have changed hands.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Whitehall i on Lady's Island, just over the bridge on your right on the lady's Island side. It was an old home with a beautiful view of the river. I remember it being there back in the 70's.

Vieques, PR(Zone 11)

That must be it then because it was an older house that was it.

Small world.

Alice,

I can finally say your daisy tree is going out today.

That little guy grew so much I had a hard time getting him into the tri box. I measured him for the fun of it and he is 27" with a heathy trunk.

Enjoy him.
