Is it seed in the dead flower of my hyacinth

Royalla, Australia

Hi Everyone,

I have a lovely group of hyacinth called woodstock, today while looking at them I noticed that inside the dead flower what appeared to be a seed. It looks similar to my calla seed. I would love for someone with more hyacinth knowledge to advise what I should do if this is seed. Do I dry it out or leave it in the flower until the flower is completely dry and spent. If it is seed do I raise it the same as I do the calla seed of should I be using some other type of method?

All help with this one would be greatfully appreciated.

Cheers

Windale,

I am told that hyacinth bulbs are very difficult to propagate from seed - though yes the flowers probably went to seed and formed large seedpods if you did not pull them off. However, allowing them to go to seed diminishes the bulb's food supply, and they may not return as well next year. I have many types of hyacinths, including Woodstocks, and I usually cut the flower head off as soon as it starts to die. You can always plant them as an experiment and see what happens, though! If you want to do this, I would wait until the seed pod is ready to fall off on its own.

Thnaks for the advice steveftworth, I will take the flower now as it is dying and see what I can do with the seed. Should I let the seed dry out or just plant it into a seed raising medium.

Cheers
