New plants for Diane

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 9a)

Hey everyone, if you are interested in growing out some plants for Diane over the winter, this is the signup thread. I would like Carol to post what she is starting first. She is going to look over previous orders from her. After that it is a free for all. Just add to the thread what you will be starting for her. I know some of us have smaller collections. Don't worry about repeating cuttings, she can repot them into a larger plant. Or if you want to offer to send her some larger nursery size pots for potting up, I think that would be excellent. There is no limit to what you want to start. If you don't have a large collection, don't worry, use your imagination. Any other suggestions would be appreciated!

Great idea Heather! By the time she is settled again we will be able to send her some plants.
I'm in....

Susan

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

This evening I will get a history of her orders and post them. In the meantime, I am untangling my large plants, and some I have to cut apart, and have been throwing away the vines (I know, I WILL go to hell for that), but now I will pot them up and have a Dianne corner. I have asked another grower friend of mine to do the same.

UPDATE. Just talked to Dianne and she really loved her macrophyllas, and IML 88 and the big leafed ones....but even the carnosas she loved, and lost. So whatever ANYbody can root...GREAT!

Heather: put me down as growing H. macrophylla, H. macrophylla variegated, IML 88, H. aff. finlaysonii, H. limoniaca, H. pusilla, H. anulata, H. walliniana, H. cv. Minibelle and I will check and see what else I can add...and will add more as they come up.

She LOVES hearing from us. She said the phone calls from everyone are really helping her get primed for a new start in life. She has found about 15 salt logged hoyas she is trying to rescue....anyone know how?

TTYL,
Carol

Knoxville, TN

Excellent idea, Heather!
I know I can start fat pots of H. cv. Joy and H. cv. Ruthie. I can also cover the kerrii clan with the green, variegated and reverse variegated. I'll look through the greenhouse and see what other large leaf speices I can come up with.
It would be fun if we shower her with boxes of Hoyas when she is able to return to her home.
I'll check with my friend Susie, who is the resident mad scientist on the Brug forum, about the salt logged Hoyas. She may have some ideas on the salt logged Hoyas. I wonder if she has fresh water? If so, she might want to blast the leaves and roots with a hose.

Decatur, IN(Zone 5a)

I would love to grow her a plant of H. meliflua (sp.?). She bought the one I have during a trip to Florida so it might be more special to her. IF anyone knows if she needs hanging baskets, let me know. I don't know what condition her plants are in or if they got blown away. I sure hope her greenhouse didn't get damaged.

I agree with Mel, she will need to really rinse off the leaves & stems off with fresh water & then repot in fresh soil.
Gemila

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Her GH is GONE...everything is in salty mud. I suggested that she rinse the hoyas off and then soak them in fresh water and change the water if she can daily. It is worth a try.

I just got this from a good friend of mine on the West Coast who has a huge GH and a big Hoya collection:...... I feel really bad about your friend losing her hoyas..when she gets her life back again and a place to grow them, I would be more than happy to send many full grown plants to help her get started again. As usual, I have way too many, just wish I could figure out a way to get them to her by means other than shipping. Maybe I can figure out a way..I have a nephew who is a long haul truck driver and he makes trips all over the country and has many friends who does the same, I'll talk to him and see if any of them will be going that direction. I'll let you know........

There are angels all over!

I think it will help Diane knowing that there are people who are looking out for her and are going to get her back in business. It really helps to know people care when you have gone through what she has. I am figuring out what hoyas I have that can add to her collection.

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

I have a 10" pot of Hoya obovata ready and waiting to be shipped to Dianna. I probably will have more stuff pretty soon.
Ann

Long Beach, CA

I know I can help with a few lg. plants also. Main thing is to wait until she is recovered from this mess and even ready to start thinking of bringing in plants again. I think she will be ready by spring though. However, unless she replaces her greenhouse, she may not want too many large ones at first.
You are so right about her just knowing how many people are willing to help her out will be a big moral booster to her.
Such a shame that she must go back and face that depressing scene and then start the long road back to normalcy. If her whole place was flooded to that extent, I doubt if there will even be any pots or plants to rinse off.
Still, she must count her blessings in the big picture. So many lost soooo much.

It is going to be a while before she will know where she wants to relocate to or if she is going to rebuild. When I spoke with her, she is thinking she might want to move out of that area somewhere a little safer. I know she is going to appreciate the hoyas. Some of the plants she lost were over 15 yrs. old. It isn't the same, but it does help.

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

I have a very nice little 2" pot H. motoskei (I think) that I can send to Dianne as well.

Brownsville, KY(Zone 6a)

I will start H. publicalyx 'red button' and H. pottsi for Dianne.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Apparently...they have to build 10' off the ground to start with....on stilts! Lots of houses here are built like that, with garage etc. underneath....makes for airflow and it is cooler.

Knowing she will have plants to work with and look forward to is going to give her a lot of drive and support. Right now she is on antibiotics and Vit.B shots for fatigue and asthma attacks....and she is trying to stay healthy. The house where she is staying lost the laundry room to the flood so they have no laundry facilities...yikes.

Oh, god. The info about Dianne's situation just seems to not get any better (outside of the fact she and her hubby are alive). For those of you in contact with her, will you please tell her that I am thinking about her and hoping things start looking up. I have not been around on this list long enough to get to know her enough to feel comfortable calling her, but for those of you that do, please emphasize to her that I am thinking of her and wishing the best for her!!
Ann

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 9a)

I would like to grow Diane out H. DS-70, H. Bella, and a H. Carnosa that I have. So far she has 21 hoyas that will be waiting for her, not a bad start eh?
Heather

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

I would like to make a little side-bar here: All the folks on this forum have really warmed my heart! I study and teach people about all the things wrong with this world, and I often feel pretty darned depressed. Everyone's generosity in money, plants, and spirit has really reaffirmed my sense of humanity. It is truly gratifying to know that in one small corner of the world we've "got each other's backs"!
Ann
OK, back to the listings of plants for Dianne!!

Aberdeen, NC

Dianne also lost a large collection of epi's and banana trees. Anyone that would like to send her some cuttings, I am sure she would appreciate it. She is looking forward to getting back to her plants among all the other things she is dealing with. I am going to be setting aside a night blooming cereus for her along with a H. kentiana.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

OK...I can send so epis...will grow out what I can cut... Thanks for that info, Karen.

Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

Everyone~
I'm too new here to know Dianne and my collection of hoyas isn't nearly as vast as all of yours.....but I have found a way to help.
My brother&sister-in-law live in New Iberia. I've asked my sister-in-law to go to the local Home Depot, buy a nice hoya and then she will personally deliver it to Dianne. She will tell her it's from Daves' Garden and that we're all keeping her in our thoughts and prayers.
I just can't imagine what they've gone through....their losses, frustrations, and dispair. Hopefully, this will be a small ray of sunshine for her.

Betsy,
What a nice gesture. I know Dianne will love it. She is such a good person and I hate to see her going through this.

OH WONDERFUL!!! What a generous thing to do!

How did your family fare in the devastation?

Carol

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Betsy and her in-laws ROCK!!!

Prescott, AZ

O.K. I can start H. obovata, H. cumingiana, H. carnosa, and I have small plants of H. kentiana and H. DS - 70. I will see if I can get more starts this weekend. Also I will start buying up the small 2 inch pots I see in the grocery stores. mostly H. carnosa and var. carnosa, but sounds like every bit will help.

O.K. Where do I find those cute little 2" hanging pots? I use to see them on e-bay.

Have a great weekend every one.

Tami....Gemila has the pots!!!

Great list Ms'organized to the max'Kitty...keep it up!!!

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 9a)

Yes, thanks Ann, I was dreading making that post, spelling etc. You just made my day. I have a written list so that I can feel somewhat organized. This is such a fantastic feeling! The generouscity here is incredible! You ladies, and gentlemen are great friends to have!
Heather

Trelleborg, Sweden

There will be more in the spring, but I guess ours from Sweden shouldn't be on ANY list... I'm going to give several of my hoyas a nice "hair cut" in the spring and some of those just might end up somewhere else where they are more needed. Just so you all know - foreigners are also pitching in!

How about making this thread sticky?

Christina

Knoxville, TN

I agree with you Heather! This in one of the best group I have run across on Daves.
Excellent idea Christina! That way we can add to it as we grow.

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Don't know where I have known a more generous, friendly and supportive group of hoyanuts!!! I really look forward to coming here!

I have just learned that I cannot ship epis to the mainland...will check into it and let you know.

Carol

Los Angeles, CA(Zone 9a)

Does anyone know how to make this thread sticky? I'm all for it! Thanks for signing up, hopefully more to join! Anything would help her start growing again!
Heather

Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

Hey guys.....uh. what exactly IS a "sticky"? I see it from time to time but don't have the faintest idea what it means. (sheepish grin)

League City, TX(Zone 9a)

I just spoke to Dianne and posted some of the information on the other thread. But I wanted to let you know she still can't get online. So, the secret about the new plants is still safe. I wasn't going to let the cat out of the bag. She is a sweet lady and will be absolutely thrilled about it.

Her hubby found some plants on the property that might just survive. Read the other "Dianne" thread for details.

I am going to start some stuff for her too. I just don't know what yet.

Susan

Livermore, CA(Zone 9a)

I am sure I can add to this list, I know off the top of my head that I have a large H. carnosa 'Krinkle 8' that I can add and many other's I can start cuttings from. I just got home from a trip last night and it will probably take me a couple day's to get caught up around here and then I can make a list. I also know I have a 6" pot of nummeroide's growing out there that I don't need.

Patricia

Mt Zion, IL(Zone 5b)

Hey All....
Got an email from my sister-in-law.....she delivered a hanging basket of hoyas to Dianne today. My sister-in-law sat down and talked with her for a while....oh my......here's what my sis-in-law wrote:

She was telling me the last time she counted she had 300 Hoya's. She was only able to salvage 9 of them. I saw them hanging in the garage when I went. She didn't live in Sulfur, La. She lived over her by this town called Lydia. She said it was beautiful in her back yard and everything floated away. They are still waiting on the insurance to go. They said it would be about a month before they would get to them. She was also saying she went to see about getting food stamps and the line was so long and it's hot outside that she just couldn't stand up or out in the heat for that long. She doesn't know what they are going to do. Just try to start over.

I guess Dianne was very grateful for the hoya ~ bless her heart. And bless my sister-in-law's heart.....doesn't know a hoya from a hollybush..she .went to Home Depot, they didn't have any. Went to a nursery called "New Iberia Gardens" and had a sales person help her. She got three little plants (Not sure what kind) and a hanging basket and some potting soil and potted them up before she took them over there. I told her she was my "Delivery Angel". When Dianna has a place to call home again, I know she will be thrilled with the hoyas you all are starting/growing for her.
Thanks all....
Betsy

Long Beach, CA

That made me tear all up reading that. Poor Diane.
What a nice thing your sister did. Everybody else too. This is a wonderful group of kind hearted folks here.
Marcy

Brownsville, KY(Zone 6a)

Betsy,
I know that the gift you and your sister-in-law presented to Dianne has brightened her day.

I talked with Dianne on the phone last night. Things are rough for her right now. Readjustment is going to take time, a long time. When the life style one has known is suddenly ripped away, even a small touch of normalcy is welcomed.

For those who don't feel comfortable in speaking with her on the phone, I know she would appreciate a card or note. She really misses having access to a computer and being able to connect with the world via internet.

Shirley

Chowchilla, CA(Zone 10a)

Shirley, I'm on it right now!
Ann

Brownsville, KY(Zone 6a)

Ann,

That's great! :)

I believe you and Dianne have something in common, a love for cats.

Shirley

Keaau, HI(Zone 11)

Betsy...that is so wonderful what you did for Dianne. She is probably in such shock she won't 'suss' to it for a long time...then suddenly she will remember this angel who appeared offering hoyas and she will know the love and caring around her. I know Dianne for being a big hearted, sensitive and caring woman...she will get it. I cannot fathom what she is going thru!!!

Aloha,
Carol
