Leaves turning BLACK - Aiiieeee!

Um, what am I doing wrong? I don't know that much about plants - I'd like to, but I don't. I have a plant ... it's in a basket and it hangs out over the sides ... I put it outside in the sun, and when I brought it in later, some of the leaves had what looked like a dusting of SOOT on them ... but there was nothing on them, they'd partially TURNED that color. A few leaves had turned half-black, as if someone dipped them in OIL ... and they were limp and thin. WHAT DID I DO? Too much sun? Too much water when I put them out? Not enough water? I thought I gave them all enough water. :( I've movedit out of the direct sun, in case it's being caused by exposure to direct sunlight. My girlfriend says it might be the sudden exposure to direct sunlight after being in the house for so long (winter). Is that possible? And is there anything I can do to salvage the leaves that are partially black now? Or should I cut them? Thanks.

It would be helpful to know what kind of plant you have. Nonetheless, you girlfriend is probably right. Your plant seems to have gotten sunburned. Plants cannot adapt easily to dramatic changes in light. In fact some plants cannot tolerate direct sunlight at all. If you are going to keep your plant outside make sure it is in heavy shade, at least initially.

You can try trimming off the discoloerd portions of the partially blackened leaves. However, the discoloration may continue to spread for a while longer. Removing dead tissue is more of an aesthetic matter than a plant health matter.

I have written an article on moving plants outside that I will send to anyone who requests it.

I'd love to read that article. Is there anywhere on the website where you can post it? Or can you post a link to it?

The articles that I have written are not available on any site. However, I am happy to email copies to anyone who contacts me here or at wcreed@erols.com.
