Shadehouse for Brugs?

La Grange, TX(Zone 8b)

I've run out of afternoon shade for my Brugs and am thinking of getting a shadehouse for them next year. The shadecloth would block 30% of the sunlight. If I positioned the shadehouse facing east, my Brugs would get morning sun and 70% of the available sunlight the rest of the day. I live in central Texas in Zone 8b. Would that be too much shade?

Hey Bettydee!

We live north of Tyler, most of our Brugs are in the ground in nearly full shade. We have a few we have planted out where they get a lot of sun, including afternoon hot August sun. We mulch them with 3 to 4 inches of mulch and keep them watered and they're doing OK.

We generally don't get blooms till Fall, but our Mountain Treasure, Chrissy, Tropical Sunset and Cotton Candy have all bloomed at various times throughout the season. They are all in pretty much full shade.

We have Butterfly, Kyle's Giant White and Big in pretty much full sun, but this is their first year. Only Butterfly has bloomed so far, in that 'full sun' group. We missed her blooms while we were on vacation in August.

All I know Veronica is that mine in full shade or mostly shade, flower much less. But I think 30% sun reduction would be fine. I also think morning sun and all shade in the afternoon is fine also! But what do I know. LOL

Be aware some grow very tall so they might outgrow your shade house. You do not want to cut off the tops either for they flower above the first Y.
