Fall papayas....In IOWA?

Norwalk, IA(Zone 5b)

Heres my spring seedling of the giant Mexican red papaya. These are about the size of large apples now.Too late to ripen before frost.
Oh well maybe next year. But hey..it's Iowa not Florida. LOL

I collected seed from a store bought papaya after coming across a picture of the nice looking plant and then an article of about how to grow from seeds. I think I will start a few this month and the rest in early spring. Hope they work for me.
Cool picture!

I just took this this morning for the he** of it.

Papayas pop up here on our property almost weekly. Our yardman continues to chop them down but they keep popping up.

I will be glad to send you both one if I can grab it before it gets too big to ship. They seem to grow inches overnight.

The only thing I cannot promise is whether it is male or female.

Sue (and Eclipse) ... is there anything peculiar about germinating and getting the seedlings up and running? That really is a beautiful plant and my pond could seriously stand some shade next year!!!!

Here's the site I printed for instructions, sounds very easy!

Oh, okay! Piece of cake. :o) I am going to get a group of these started in March. Castor to give me early day shade on one side and this for shade in the PM. That oughta look nice!

Bogweed, the seeds are easy to germinate.

I plant the seeds the minute I remove them from the fruit. Keep warm and don't let them get cold till up and growing well. Papayas hate cold. Most kinds anyway.

Calif Sue try the mountain types for your locale otherwise the chill of Calif nights may be bad for them. The mountain types can take cold better. :-)
