I have an odd-ball hybrid (I think it to be, at least) that changes color during the day. I have it posted in the Identification forum ( http://davesgarden.com/forums/t/547311/ )
ANY input would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance! :o)
Chameloen Hibiscus?
Kell has just posted about it. The name is "Rum Runner". WIth "Fifth Dimension", another variety, is one of those that change color within the same day.
It's a very good bloomer.
Regards
Carlos
What little I've found states that the Rum Runner is one of the smaller flowered ornamental varieties/hybrids (under 4" across). The blooms on this guy are HUGE! Every bit as big as my large mallows ... and far more impressive in texture, I might add. Even the leaves on these plants are overly large, rough, dark and not at all what I am accustomed to with any sort of hibiscus thus far.
My wife brought this one home and all I remember is that the tag on this plant did not identify the species ... it was just labled, "New Exotic Hybrid" or something along those lines. I didn't share my disappointment in not knowing what it was named. We don't see eye to eye on keeping labels for plants ... no loss here, tho.
I mean, my wife would be THRILLED if this is, in fact, the proper ID ... that's one of her favorite drinks! :o)
Hi Bogweedbuck:
What you might have seen as Rum Runner with 4" blooms is mislabeled. Rum Runner is a 7-8". If you look at the information about RR in Dave's Garden
http://davesgarden.com/pf/go/47080/index.html
just the third picture matches Rum Runner. The other three are a 4" variety called "Erin Rachael".
To verify what you have is Rum Rummer, visits these three links. In the first one - a well known grower of Puerto Rico - you can see (up left corner) the three phases of Rum Runner during a day

God exists is as true as your plant is Rum Runner.

Woah ........ let's not get the Eternal "Big Guy," the Host of Hosts, if you will, involved in a little botanical banter now, okay? :o)
That's awesome! Carlos, you are good man, sir! Thanks for taking the time to find and post those links, etc. My wife will genuinely be tickled about this! Although ......... I am not sure if I want to let her see some of the other pics!!! LOL She starts seeing things like Sabre Dance and some of those others, well ... I just might start losing space for my other plants! :o) Of course, that very well may be a way to wrestle her into agreement about finally building a greenhouse...
Thanks again,
Buck
